The acts are considered punishable under the military code, according to competent sources

New details are coming to light regarding the case of a high ranking officer of the Armed Forces, who was arrested on the morning of Thursday 5/2 for espionage.
As announced by the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (GEETHA), “on Thursday 5 February 2026, during the morning hours, the competent military authorities proceeded with the arrest of a member of the Armed Forces. The arrest took place within a military facility, in cooperation and coordination with other state services, in the presence of an authorized prosecutorial authority, following clear indications of the commission of punishable acts under the Military Penal Code, namely the collection and transmission of classified information of military significance to third parties, with the risk of causing harm to national interests.”

Air force unit commander in Varkiza

According to information, the military officer, aged between 35-35 years, was a unit commander of the Air Force in Varkiza.
As has been established, he was sending classified information to China using specialized classified transmission software.
Among other things, the information concerned the Air Force, the Armed Forces, and even NATO.
In the recent period, it was determined that he had accumulated a large volume of classified material intended for transmission, while he was also attempting to recruit other individuals, which is why his arrest was expedited.
The acts attributed to the arrested individual concern the collection and transmission of classified information of military significance to third parties, as emerges from the announcement, with the risk of causing harm to national interests.
From the software found in his possession after the arrest, his activity is inferred, which allegedly took place in exchange for payment.
The acts are considered punishable under the military code and, according to competent sources, all prescribed procedures will be followed, while further announcements are expected.
The case is deemed extremely serious.
Indicative of the seriousness of the case is the fact that the identification and arrest of the Armed Forces officer involved the National Intelligence Service (EYP), services of the Hellenic Police, as well as the competent services of the Armed Forces.

Earlier BN reported:

The Greek authorities are on high alert following the revelation of an extremely serious espionage case within the Armed Forces.
On the morning of Thursday, 5 February 2026, officials of the competent services, in a lightning operation within a military facility, proceeded with the arrest of an active duty military officer, who is accused of collecting and channeling classified documents and information to third parties.
The operation, which was coordinated by GEETHA in close cooperation with state security services and under the supervision of a military prosecutor, reveals activity considered a direct threat to national interests.
“On Thursday 5 February 2026, during the morning hours, the competent military authorities proceeded with the arrest of a member of the Armed Forces. The arrest took place within a military facility, in cooperation and coordination with other state services, in the presence of an authorized prosecutorial authority, following clear indications of the commission of punishable acts under the Military Penal Code, namely the collection and transmission of classified information of military significance to third parties, with the risk of causing harm to national interests,” the GEETHA announcement states.
Following the arrest of the Armed Forces officer, a new cycle of investigations is expected to begin, focusing on mapping the communication network of the arrested individual. The “third parties” mentioned in the announcement constitute the key to the case. The authorities will need to examine whether these are agents of foreign powers, private interests, or even criminal organizations seeking to exploit military data for geopolitical or economic gain.
According to information, the digital traces, telephone communications, and bank accounts of the military officer are under the microscope of analysts. The aim is to determine the duration of his activity and whether there were other individuals within the armed forces who acted as accomplices or provided cover, willingly or unwittingly.

Provisions of the Military Penal Code

The Military Penal Code is particularly strict in cases involving treason and espionage. According to the relevant articles, the transmission of information concerning state security in peacetime may lead to multi year prison sentences, while if it is proven that such an act placed the country’s defensive capability at immediate risk, the penalties reach the maximum limits provided by law.
The judicial investigation will be called upon to determine whether the accused acted with intent, what the financial or other compensation was, and how deep his access was to classified information systems. The presence of a military prosecutor from the very first moment underscores the legal safeguarding of the process to ensure that there are no gaps in the criminal prosecution.
