Conflict in Southeast Asia spirals out of control - Thailand launches air attack on Cambodia
Thailand launched a preemptive strike on Cambodian military facilities, accusing it of a missile weapons threat.

The armed forces of Thailand attacked Cambodian military facilities due to the latter's readiness to use force, said the spokesman for the Special Operations Center for the management of the situation on the Thailand - Cambodia border, Surasan Khongsiri, in a press briefing.

According to the newspaper Khaosod, he said: "Yes, we launched a preemptive strike for justified reasons."

According to the military official, the decision was made because of "the existence of an immediate threat from Cambodia, expressed in the enemy's possession of missile weapons and the readiness to use them."

According to the report, F-16 fighters of the Royal Thai Air Force launched GBU-12 Paveway II guided bombs at a Cambodian warehouse containing BM-21 multiple rocket launcher system missiles and other heavy weapons. The air attack caused a powerful secondary explosion of the ammunition stored there.

At the same time, the Thai Navy began expelling Cambodian forces from the Trat province, according to The Nation newspaper. "Despite Thailand's restraint and ongoing efforts for dialogue, Cambodian forces did not withdraw from Thai territory," said naval spokesman Parat Rattanachaiphan. He added that the Cambodian authorities, on the contrary, reinforced their forces with special forces, snipers, and multiple rocket launcher systems. All these actions, he said, violate Thailand's sovereignty.

It is recalled that yesterday (8/12) conflicts broke out on the border between Thailand and Cambodia. Thailand accused Cambodia of attacks on civilian areas in Buriram province. Following an attack on a Thai military base in Anupong, which resulted in casualties on both sides, Thailand refused to negotiate and approved new military operations, despite the summer ceasefire.
