New talks between Russia and Ukraine kick off on November 10-11, 2026, in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, involving direct US engagement and mediation. US Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in the UAE under US mediation. "The United States will mediate working-level talks between Ukraine and Russia on November 10-11 in Abu Dhabi," Witkoff posted on social media. The special envoy added that prior to the meeting, American negotiators will discuss guarantees for Ukraine and the contours of a future security architecture with representatives from France, Germany, Britain, the EU, and NATO in Brussels.
Last week, a meeting took place in Oslo involving Zelensky, the Finnish president, the Norwegian prime minister, and Witkoff. The following day, the American negotiator traveled to Saint Petersburg, where he presented documents outlining approaches toward resolving the Ukrainian conflict to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The president, for his part, informed him of Moscow's readiness to resume tripartite consultations involving Washington and Kyiv. As Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted, at the scheduled meeting in Abu Dhabi, parties will discuss security guarantees for Russia and Ukraine, shaping Abu Dhabi peace talks.
De-escalation and humanitarian efforts to be discussed at Abu Dhabi talks on Ukraine
Russian and Ukrainian delegations will discuss de-escalation and post-war security at the Abu Dhabi talks, emphasized US Special Presidential Envoy Witkoff. Furthermore, Witkoff added, the parties will discuss humanitarian issues as well as further steps toward peace. Witkoff had previously announced that talks between representatives of Russia and Ukraine would take place in the United Arab Emirates on November 10–11. Washington will act as mediator. Prior to the November 10–11, 2026 meeting, American negotiators will discuss guarantees for Kyiv and the contours of a future security architecture in Brussels with representatives of France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the EU, and NATO. Earlier, US President Donald Trump compared the leaders of Russia and Ukraine. He stated that Russian leader Putin actually desires a deal more than his counterpart Zelensky, influencing US Ukraine mediation.
Europe needs a different approach to participating in Ukraine negotiations; current involvement is pointless
Europe ought to be at the negotiation table for a settlement in Ukraine, but under its current approach, such participation will prove futile, stated Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov. Peskov noted that Brussels continues to declare that Russia has suffered a strategic defeat. "This is a very difficult situation. On the one hand, they ought to be at the negotiation table. But why do they need to be there now with this approach? It is pointless. That is why they are not there now," stated the Russian president's press secretary, defining European diplomatic involvement.
