Developments on the Middle East war front are rapid, with tension escalating in every direction. According to Turkish authorities, an Iranian ballistic munition was detected heading toward Turkish airspace after interceptions over the territories of Iraq and Syria. "A ballistic missile, launched from Iran and detected heading toward Turkish airspace after crossing Iraqi and Syrian airspace, was neutralized in time by NATO missile defenses located in the Eastern Mediterranean." According to the announcement, the projectile was detected after crossing the airspace of Iraq and Syria and turning toward Turkey. NATO systems were activated in time and intercepted it before it posed a direct threat.
The secret of Souda revealed
Meanwhile, a sensation was caused by the revelation of the General Secretary of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, in a conversation with parliamentary correspondents in Parliament, that "two of the drones from Cyprus were heading for Souda." In fact, when asked by a journalist if this was an estimate or information, he said, "we know it."
Communication between Hakan Fidan and Abbas Araghchi
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Hakan Fidan, had a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, following the incident of the ballistic missile that was detected heading toward Turkish airspace and neutralized by air defense systems. According to diplomatic sources, Hakan Fidan conveyed to Abbas Araghchi Ankara's strong reaction to the projectile launched from Iran which, after crossing the airspaces of third countries, was detected heading toward Turkey before being intercepted. The Turkish minister pointed out the growing risk of regional escalation, underlining that any action that could lead to an expansion of the conflict must be avoided. The communication took place at a particularly tense juncture, with Ankara sending a clear message that it is closely monitoring developments and will not allow threats against its national security.
No casualties
A part of a munition found in the Dörtyol area of Hatay province was attributed to an anti-aircraft interceptor missile, which was used to destroy the threat in the air. As clarified, there were no fatalities or injuries.
The Ministry underlined that Turkey possesses the will and operational capability to ensure its national security, emphasizing that every necessary measure for the defense of its territory and airspace will be taken "with determination and without hesitation." At the same time, it reminded that Ankara maintains the right to respond to any hostile action, calling on all parties to avoid moves that could lead to further escalation in the region. As noted, Turkey will continue coordination and consultations with NATO and its allies.
Burhanettin Duran: "Every step will be taken without hesitation"
The Directorate of Communications also issued a statement. The Head of Communications, Burhanettin Duran, confirmed that missile parts fell in an open area in Dörtyol, Hatay, clarifying that it was a piece of an interceptor missile and not the original ballistic projectile. "Our ability to ensure the security of our country and our nation is at the highest level. Every necessary step for the defense of our territory and airspace will be taken without any hesitation," he stressed. Burhanettin Duran added that potential hostile actions will be dealt with within the framework of international law, while reiterating the importance of cooperation with NATO and allies. At the same time, he appealed to the media and social media users to show responsibility, avoiding the spread of unconfirmed information that may cause panic or misinformation. Finally, he reminded that, as President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has repeatedly pointed out, Turkey is working diplomatically for the prevalence of peace and stability in the region, seeking to avoid further escalation and the resolution of disputes based on international law.
NATO condemns the targeting of Turkey
NATO condemned Iran's attack on Turkey after the Turkish Ministry of Defense revealed that NATO air defenses destroyed an Iranian ballistic missile approaching Turkish airspace. "NATO stands firmly by all allies, including Turkey, as Iran continues its indiscriminate attacks throughout the region," said alliance spokesperson Allison Hart. She added that NATO's deterrent and defensive posture "remains strong in all domains, including air and missile defense."
US submarine hit the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena, off the coast of Sri Lanka - 101 missing
The military conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran is taking on uncontrollable and global dimensions, now reaching the shores of the Indian Ocean. The sinking of the Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka is turning into a thriller, with the country's authorities announcing on Wednesday that they rescued 32 people who were on board and recovered several bodies from the sea, as according to sources cited by Reuters, the submarine that sank the frigate is American. The Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, Vijitha Herath, told parliament that the ship, identified as IRIS Dena, has sunk.
Sources from the navy and the Ministry of Defense of Sri Lanka stated that the vessel was allegedly attacked by a submarine and that at least 101 people are missing in the incident that occurred in the Indian Ocean, off the country's coast. A spokesperson for the Sri Lankan Navy, however, denied the number of 101 missing and dismissed reports regarding the causes of the sinking. According to him, 32 injured were rescued by the navy and are being treated at a state hospital in the southern port of Galle. The navy received a distress signal from an Iranian ship and informed the Sri Lanka Air Force, with the two forces launching a search and rescue operation. Sri Lankan authorities are focusing primarily on rescuing survivors and will investigate the causes of the incident at a later stage. Meanwhile, no presence of another ship or aircraft was recorded in the area at the time of the event. "We hope that we will be able to rescue more people and will continue operations until we are certain," the spokesperson stated.

What happened
Sri Lanka Navy forces earlier reported that they rescued about thirty to thirty-five Iranians from the warship IRIS Dena, which had issued a distress signal, reporting that it was sinking. According to Sri Lankan officials, the distress signal was received early Wednesday morning from the Dena, which was off the coast of Galle. The Navy immediately executed a rescue mission, with support from the country's Air Force. Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath later informed MPs that there were 180 Iranian sailors on board the IRIS Dena, from whom 30-35 people were rescued. The survivors were taken to the national hospital in Galle.
The cause of the accident has not been immediately disclosed. US forces through central command have systematically sunk Iranian warships in the Middle East, claiming to have destroyed 17 to date, and on Tuesday pledged to continue until the Iranian fleet is eliminated. Galle is located thousands of miles away from the conflict zone, in the area of responsibility of the Indo-Pacific Command.
Iranian diplomats seek answers for the causes of the sinking off Sri Lanka
Any diplomatic tension that may arise will be linked to the possibility that the sinking was not due to a typical accident, but to something more serious, according to Al Jazeera. For now, the government of Sri Lanka is maintaining a cautious stance and has not made statements regarding the possible causes. The only certainty is that a distress signal was received from the ship about 40 kilometers off the coast of Galle, south of the capital Colombo. The authorities sent vessels to assist the survivors. So far, sources state there are no indications of another ship's presence in the area at the time of the incident. The Iranian Ambassador, as well as the head of the embassy, stated they have sent the military attaché and a consular official to the hospital to speak with the survivors and determine exactly what happened.
Among the most modern warships
The IRIS Dena was one of Iran's most modern warships. Delivered in 2021, it featured domestically manufactured engines and armament. It became widely known in 2022-23 due to its participation in a global tour, while it had been sent to India for the International Fleet Review 2026 exercises, which it had completed before its sinking. The Dena frigate had a displacement of approximately 1,300-1,500 tons and a length of about 94-95 meters, with the capability for a helicopter to land and be received at the stern. It featured engines produced by Iran and had propulsion and maneuvering systems for improved agility at sea. It is one of the newest ships of the Iranian fleet, commissioned in 2021, and has participated in international naval activities, such as official visits and exercises with other countries.
