A new, disruptive formula for Turkey’s return to the F-35 program is being revealed by German media, once again putting Brussels and the entire NATO on alert.
According to the reports, Turkey’s exclusion from the program is now increasingly considered a “strategic mistake” for the security of the Alliance.
The idea that Turkey’s reintegration is critical for NATO security is resonating ever more strongly in Brussels.
The German press emphasizes that Turkey’s removal was “unjust,” while a plan is emerging that combines the support of Donald Trump with the “German model”.
German model
According to German reports, Turkey could follow a process similar to Germany’s for acquiring the F-35.
Germany chose the F-35s primarily because of their ability to carry American nuclear weapons, and a corresponding approach is now being examined for Turkey within the framework of NATO.
The analysis argues that this scenario would strengthen the Alliance against Russia.
The formula on the table provides for the granting of F-35s to Turkey with limited capabilities, while the entire process would extend over a long period of time.
However, according to the German press, “even in the most optimistic scenario, it could take eight to ten years for Turkey to receive its F-35s”.
An analysis in the German press states that Donald Trump is considering the standard F-35A option for Turkey, instead of the F-35B version.
The columnist notes characteristically that “Trump is not backing down from the sale of F-35s to Turkey and the likely scenario is the delivery of the F-35A version,” adding that reactions from Israel have proven ineffective.
Intense pressure
Israeli and Greek lobbies are exerting intense pressure to prevent the sale of F-35s to Turkey.
At the same time, Israel is preparing to use every available means to block the sale, although assessments in the Wall Street Journal suggest that the sale does not constitute an immediate threat to Israel.
The German press underlines that the Trump approach is a continuation of United States policy of using arms sales as a strategic and economic tool.
It is reported that more limited versions could be offered to Turkey and Saudi Arabia, while Israel’s technological superiority will remain non negotiable.
This new formula brings Turkey back to the center of an international strategic confrontation, once again bringing the F-35s and their implications for the balance of power in NATO and the wider region to the forefront.
