Political earthquake in the United States - Marjorie Taylor Greene resigns - Devastating rift between MAGA and Trump
Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of the most emblematic and controversial figures of the MAGA movement, triggers political shock by abruptly resigning from Congress, just one week after being officially “disavowed” by Donald Trump.

One week after the President of the United States Donald Trump withdrew his “support and encouragement” for Marjorie Taylor Greene, the anti-establishment congresswoman from Georgia stunned supporters and opponents alike by announcing that she would resign from Congress.
The move also comes shortly after Greene’s role in pressuring Trump, which led to a major political reversal where Trump suddenly encouraged Congress to pass legislation requiring the release of the files from the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein.

In a video filmed in her living room in Georgia and posted on X, Greene said that her last day in office would be January 5, expressing regret that “no matter which way the political pendulum swings, Republicans or Democrats, nothing ever improves for the ordinary American man or woman.”
As examples, she cited the continued replacement of American jobs with foreign labor, the use of tax dollars “to fund foreign wars, foreign aid, and foreign interests,” rising debt, and the erosion of the dollar.
She also complained that various bills she introduced to advance the MAGA agenda “just sit there gathering dust,” as the House leadership ignores them.

In another part of her ten-minute announcement, Greene said:
“Loyalty should go both ways, and we should be able to vote our conscience and represent the interests of our district… [My job] has brought years of nonstop, endless personal attacks, death threats, ridiculous smears, and lies… I have too much self-respect and dignity. I love my family too much. And I do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hate-filled primary campaign against me from the president we all fought for, only for me to fight and win my election while Republicans likely lose the midterms. And in turn, to be expected to defend the President against impeachment after he maliciously threw tens of millions of dollars against me and tried to destroy me. It is all so absurd and completely unserious. I refuse to be an ‘abused wife’ hoping things will go away and get better.”

“If MAGA Inc. throws me out and replaces me with Neoconservatives, Big Pharma, Big Tech, the Military-Industrial Complex, foreign leaders, and the elite donor class who cannot even relate to real Americans, then many ordinary Americans have also been thrown out and replaced. There is no ‘plan to save the world’ or some absurd game of 4D chess being played.”

The previous Friday night, during an outburst that also targeted Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, Trump published a 300-word rant attacking “Crazy Marjorie” and announcing that he was withdrawing his “support and encouragement” for her.
Trump said he was prepared to give the “Full and Total Endorsement” to the “right” Republican primary challenger.

After Greene announced her resignation, Trump told ABC News that her impending departure from the House was “great news for the country… I think it’s wonderful. I think she should be happy.”

Harsh critic of Trump

First elected in 2020 to represent Georgia’s northwestern 14th Congressional District, Greene was considered a central figure of the “Make America Great Again” movement, even after Trump’s attempt last week to “excommunicate” her, calling her a “screaming lunatic” who “has gone very left.”

Over the last year especially, Greene has increasingly acted as an irritant for the Republican establishment.
Beyond being one of only four House Republicans who voted in favor of Massie’s measure, which ultimately forced Trump to reverse position on the Epstein files, Greene resisted Trump’s support for Ukraine and condemned House Republican leadership for ending Obamacare subsidies without alternative measures to make health insurance more affordable.

Significantly, Greene has become the most outspoken Republican critic of U.S. support for Israel in Congress, repeatedly opposing additional aid to what she calls “the secular government of Israel,” accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza, and demanding that AIPAC be registered as a foreign agent.
Although she did not mention Israel by name in her resignation announcement, Greene appeared to target those who place excessive emphasis on Israeli interests:
America First should mean America First, and only America First, with no other foreign country ever being attached to America First in the halls of our government!”

Massie, who is himself the target of a Trump-backed primary challenge funded by three billionaires who support Israel, expressed sadness about losing a key ally, writing:
“I am very sad for our country but so happy for my friend Marjorie. I will miss her terribly. She embodies what a true Representative should be. Everyone should read her statement; there is more honesty expressed in those four pages than most politicians say in a lifetime.”

Political repercussions

Greene’s resignation will further shrink the already razor-thin Republican majority in the House, they currently hold 219 seats versus 213 for the Democrats, with three seats vacant.

Under Georgia law, Governor Brian Kemp will have 10 days after Greene’s departure in January to call a special election, which must take place within 30 days of that order.
Greene’s district is safely Republican, she was re-elected last year with 64% of the vote to 36%.

Early Saturday morning, President Trump commented on Greene’s resignation on Truth Social, writing:
Marjorie “Traitor” Brown, because of collapsing poll numbers and because she does not want to face a primary opponent with strong Trump support (where she would have NO chance of winning!), has decided to quit. Her relationship with the WORST Republican congressman in decades, Tom Massie of Kentucky, aka Rand Paul Jr. because he votes against the Republican Party (and very good legislation!), did not help her. For some reason, mainly because I refused to respond to her endless barrage of phone calls, Marjorie snapped. Nevertheless, I will always appreciate Marjorie and thank her for her service to our country! President DJT.”

The House is not big enough for her ambitions or her personality,” said Steve Bannon, close ally of Trump and host of the War Room podcast, to the New York Times after Greene’s announcement.
“They stripped her of her committee assignments by Pelosi in her first term, and she became a national figure. We have not seen or heard the last word from Marjorie Taylor Greene.”
