The Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, announced on Sunday, 26 October 2025, that the country will not participate in EU plans to finance the conflict in Ukraine.
“As head of the government, I reject Slovakia’s participation in any funding plan aimed at supporting Ukraine to address the war and military expenditures,” Fico stated during a meeting with journalists.
According to him, the EU plans to provide Kyiv with 140 billion euros over the coming years.
“This is the biggest mistake the Union is about to make,” he noted.
Fico argued that the EU is proposing various financing schemes for Ukraine, one of which is a loan, which he believes the country will never be able to repay.
The head of government also emphasized that the flow of migrants from Ukraine to Europe has increased significantly since September.
These are mainly Ukrainians aged 18 to 22, since the government lifted the exit ban from the country at the end of August.
“Now we are seeing a large influx of young people of this age,” the Prime Minister noted.
Fico supported the resumption of active cooperation between the member states of the Visegrad group (Slovakia, Czechia, Poland, and Hungary).
This opportunity, he said, arises with the upcoming election of a new government in Czechia, under Andrej Babiš.
The Prime Minister emphasized that it is necessary to immediately hold a meeting of the Group’s foreign ministers, followed by a summit at the level of prime ministers.
Finally, Fico rejected opposition claims that Slovakia is isolated in Europe due to its pro-Russia foreign policy.
He stated that the government is pursuing an effective policy oriented toward defending the country’s national interests.
