Mitsotakis alarmed by corruption protests and “Routsi-style” movements – Earthquake caused by new revelations in OPEKEPE case
The new round of investigations by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office is expected to be far more “weighty” than the first, as it is likely to touch individuals considered beyond suspicion — politicians, businesspeople, and executives allegedly involved in collusion, direct assignments, and mismanagement of European funds.
It is clear that the political defeat suffered by the government over the Panos Routsi affair is both significant and symbolic.
A largely non-partisan crowd rallied around a human story — a simple and reasonable demand — and ended up threatening the government’s cohesion.
The Mitsotakis administration may not be directly threatened by the opposition as it currently stands, but the square movement — the wave of anger over the Tempi tragedy — remains active and continues to cause major political damage.

Suddenly, it’s a “national monument”?
Thus, the Prime Minister decided to align himself with the view that the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is sacred and that popular protests should not take place around it. Of course, this is misleading.
During the bailout years, all major uprisings took place at the site of the Unknown Soldier. What does that mean? That those who demonstrated disrespected the nation’s battles?

Mitsotakis shifts responsibility to Dendias… Convenient.

The real reason this issue has resurfaced in public discourse is that the Prime Minister and the Maximos Mansion fear a popular uprising — like the one during the lockdowns, or the one after the Tempi disaster, when the squares of cities across the country overflowed with people.
And the Prime Minister’s response is to declare that the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier should come under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of National Defence.
In other words, responsibility would be transferred to Defence Minister Nikos Dendias. And with a broad interpretation, this could mean that restoring “order” in that area might require the involvement of the army rather than the police...

Second round of OPEKEPE investigations expected to bring shocking revelations of illicit enrichment

The Maximos Mansion, therefore, fears the uprisings fuelled by the Tempi case, the toxicological reports that will reveal what was found in the charred remains of the victims of the doomed train.
It also fears what is coming next — the bad news that is beginning to emerge in the OPEKEPE case, as corruption involving former ministers and MPs starts to take shape.
Towards late November or early December, the second round of investigations by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office into OPEKEPE and a number of other major cases already preoccupying Brussels is expected to begin.
According to reports, the dossiers that have reached the European Commission include complaints, recordings, and documents indicating unjustified enrichment by specific individuals who held key positions.
Kövesi determined to see it through to the end
The new round of investigations is believed to be far heavier than the first, as it is expected to reach individuals once thought untouchable — politicians, business figures, and senior officials allegedly involved in collusion, rigged contracts, and the mismanagement of EU funds.
According to sources, there are references to networks of intermediaries and middlemen who operated as “vehicles” for the dispersion of EU resources into phantom projects and subsidies with no real substance.
As well-informed insiders stress, this time “no one will be able to hide.”
European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kövesi is said to be determined to fully open the case, trace the entire path of the money, and ensure accountability at every level — political, administrative, and business alike.
