Russian analyst Pyotr Akopov sharply criticizes the foreign policy of American President Donald Trump, arguing that the United States is increasingly using the intensity of rhetoric as a means of pressure, without, however, possessing the capability or the intention to proceed with a new large-scale military escalation.
In his article in RIA Novosti, Akopov argues that the latest developments surrounding Iran and Ukraine represent more of an attempt to exert psychological pressure than an indication of real military preparation.
Attack against Iran and harsh rhetoric
The analyst refers to the statements made by Donald Trump during the NATO Summit in Ankara, where the American president launched a new attack against the Iranian leadership, using particularly harsh descriptions and warning that Washington does not rule out new military operations.
At the same time, he recalled American criticisms toward European allies regarding both their defense spending and their stance during the recent conflict with Iran.
According to Akopov, this aggressive rhetoric aims to put pressure on Tehran, which announced the suspension of peace talks following the latest developments.
"Washington has no room for a new war"
The Russian columnist estimates that, despite public threats, the United States would hardly choose a new generalized military conflict with Iran.
In his view, a new wave of hostilities could lead to Iranian attacks against American bases in the Middle East and cause a new crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, with serious consequences for the global energy market.
For this reason, Akopov argues that Washington is mainly attempting to deter further moves by Tehran through the intensity of its rhetoric.
The policy on Ukraine also targeted
The analyst extends his criticism to the Ukrainian front as well, arguing that Donald Trump's references to a rapid peace, as well as scenarios regarding a potential transfer of Patriot system technology or even the reinforcement of Ukraine's air defense, constitute political messages rather than realistic plans.
According to him, any direct military involvement of the US in protecting Ukrainian airspace would be considered by Russia as direct participation in the war, a fact which, as he argues, Washington seeks to avoid.
"Moscow is unaffected by threats"
Pyotr Akopov concludes that both Russia and Iran now view Washington's public warnings with skepticism, considering that the United States is choosing the tactic of political pressure because it does not desire the expansion of military conflicts.
As he notes, Moscow believes it knows the limits of American moves and estimates that Washington's threats are not necessarily accompanied by an intention for direct action.
