Kyiv: The Russians leveled it with 68 missiles, 351 drones – Shock, Ukraine did not shoot down a single Zircon or Iskander
The airstrike comes just hours after a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump, and 24 hours before the NATO Summit in Turkey

Kyiv suffered one of its worst attacks earlier today, Monday, July 6, in the early morning hours, with Ukrainian sources reporting that Ukrainian air defense failed to intercept a single one of the Zircon, Iskander, and S-400 missiles launched by the Russians. The Russian assault was unleashed with a total of 68 missiles and 351 drones, with the Russian Ministry of Defense claiming that it was in retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on civilian targets inside Russian territory. The airstrike comes just hours after a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump, and 24 hours before the NATO Summit in Turkey, serving as a clear message from Russia to Ukraine regarding who still holds the upper hand on the military—and political—front.

Sweeping attack

The Armed Forces of Ukraine announced that Russia launched 68 missiles and 351 unmanned aerial vehicles (primarily Geran-3) against Ukraine overnight, with Kyiv as the primary target. It causes a major impression, as the Ukrainians themselves admit, that they failed to intercept a single Zircon, Iskander-M, or S-400 missile. According to Ukrainian data, the breakdown by missile and drone type is as follows:
• Zircon/Oniks missiles: 6 launched – no reports of shootdowns.
• Iskander-M/S-400 missiles: 23 launched – no reports of shootdowns.
• Kh-101 missiles: 33 launched – 31 shot down.
• Kalibr missiles: 6 launched – according to Ukrainian authorities, all were shot down.

At the same time, the Ukrainian armed forces report that 326 unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down or neutralized using electronic warfare means. According to the same announcement, strikes from 29 missiles and 18 drones were recorded across 34 different locations, while debris from downed drones fell in another 16 spots.1_1295.jpg

The targets

Russian forces struck the Kyiv-71 enterprise, which is involved in the development and production of unmanned aerial vehicles, according to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense. "In Kyiv, the Kyiv-71 industrial enterprise (Abris PT association) was hit, one of the core enterprises of Ukraine's military-industrial complex, which specializes in the development and production of long- and medium-range reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles, such as the Strila, Mara, Sirko, Avenger, Elf-K, Flight Arrow, as well as Shrike-10 FPV drones, along with telemetry systems, electronic, and optical equipment," the Russian Ministry of Defense statement noted.

In addition, it is reported that the Kyiv-79 enterprise as well as the Kuznitsa na Rybalskom shipyard in Kyiv were hit, one of the country's largest engineering industries, which builds the artillery patrol boats of the Project 58155 Gyurza class and repairs unmanned strike vessels. Furthermore, the Kyiv-1 instrument factory (Kvant factory) was struck, a key scientific and industrial unit involved, among other things, in the production of Neptun-MD missiles. In the Kyiv region, the Zhulyany missile complexes and components plant and the fuel and lubricants depot in Vyshneve (the Nefteeksperimentalnoye KP enterprise) were also hit. "The gasoline and diesel reserves located at the facilities are used for urgent fuel dispatches to the combat operations zone," the Russian Ministry of Defense stated.1_1295.jpg

Hydroelectric and thermoelectric power plants in Kyiv turned to ash

The targets also included the facilities of the Roshen company in Kyiv—owned by former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko—which actively finances the Ukrainian armed forces, as well as the capital's hydroelectric and thermoelectric stations (HPP, TPP-5, and TPP-6). It is also reported that UKR ARMO TECH was hit, one of the main manufacturers and suppliers of armored vehicles and armor systems for Ukrainian military equipment.

Evacuation of residents underway

Ukrainian sources report that "Kyiv is in flames," while images circulating online show the aftermath of the attacks. At the same time, a powerful blow was recorded in Vyshneve of the Kyiv region, where Geran drones were deployed. As reported, Russian forces struck storage and logistics areas along the highway, as well as a missile and artillery weapons depot, which caused a powerful secondary explosion with ammunition cooking off. An evacuation order was issued for the settlement, while the risk of new explosions remains high. Following the massive fire in Vyshneve, air quality deteriorated significantly. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary movement and keep their windows closed. Intense complaints about suffocating smoke and a burning odor are also being recorded in Kyiv.121.jpeg

Thick smoke

The successive explosions covered the sky of Kyiv with thick smoke, while images allegedly showing both the explosions and their consequences were published on social media. Ukrainian media, according to the report, characteristically wrote: "Kyiv is in flames." Several areas have been cordoned off, while an air raid alert was declared once again. Monitoring services also report the risk of a new attack with unmanned aerial vehicles.22_13.png

Problems with electricity and water supply

Following the first wave of missile strikes, fires broke out in Kyiv and extensive power outages occurred, while it is also claimed that the city is facing water supply problems. The Telegram channel "Operation Z: Voenkory Russkoy Vesny" reports that the initial targets were the Kyiv hydroelectric power plant in Vyshhorod, facilities in the south of the city, as well as areas around Bucha and Irpin. "Columns of smoke are rising into the sky. Powerful explosions in Kyiv: a missile strike was carried out against energy facilities," the channel reports. Later, it added that "the attack continues, with new missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles heading toward the targets." According to the publication, after the first wave of attacks, disruptions were recorded in the electricity and water supply of the Ukrainian capital.3_306.png

Strikes across all of Kyiv

Information indicates that strikes were recorded in almost all districts of Kyiv. According to social media posts, "all districts of the capital are covered in black smoke." Due to the situation, municipal authorities urged residents to keep their windows closed. In statements, the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, who visited one of the strike sites, announced that the death toll from the overnight attack has risen to 11, while 46 people have been injured.11_10.jpeg

What Russia reports

The Russian Ministry of Defense issued a statement noting that, in response to the "terrorist attacks of the illegal Zelensky regime," it launched massive strikes against energy facilities, defense industries, and military airfields in Ukraine. According to the same announcement, the heaviest attacks occurred in Kyiv and its region, while strikes were also reported in the Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv regions. As the Ministry of Defense of Russia claims, the massive attack was carried out with high-precision long-range weapons launched from land, air, and sea platforms, as well as strike drones. The Russian Ministry of Defense specified that Russian forces hit defense industry and energy sector facilities in Kyiv and the Kyiv region. At the same time, they attacked military airfields in the Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv regions. On July 5, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Ukraine is striking Russia's energy and civilian infrastructure, which, according to him, is not linked to the military-industrial complex. Earlier, Russian sources had reported that Russia has changed its tactics regarding strikes in Ukraine.4444_1.png

Severe damage

According to Ukrainian authorities, the most severe damage was recorded in the Podil district of Kyiv, where a nine-story residential building was struck. It is estimated that people may still be trapped under the rubble. Additionally, a 21-story residential building suffered damage, experiencing a partial collapse between the third and fourth floors. In the same area, fires also broke out in four residential buildings.54444_3.jpg

In the Darnytskyi district, the bombardment struck a 25-story residential building at the level of the fourth floor. Residents became trapped on the upper floors, and rescuers evacuated a total of 22 people. In yet another 30-story residential building, a fire broke out on the 23rd and 24th floors, while the operation to evacuate the residents is underway. Strikes were also reported at the residential complexes "Varshavskyi" and "Slavutych," as well as near apartment buildings in the Pozniaky area, where several apartments and vehicles were completely destroyed by fire. In the Obolon district, a fire broke out in a warehouse and another building, while a strike was also recorded at a non-residential construction site.222_43.jpg

Kyiv was the main target

As reported by Russian war correspondent Alexander Kots, in Kyiv, which constituted the main target of the night, a production workshop and an ammunition depot of the Ukrainian armed forces were also destroyed in the Holosiivskyi district. In the same area, another warehouse was hit, followed by a secondary explosion. On the grounds of the Kyiv hydroelectric station, strikes were recorded in the engine room and the electricity distribution substation that feeds the city's power grid. In other districts of Kyiv and the suburbs, storage facilities and industrial zones were also hit.332.png

Patriot missiles fell in districts of Kyiv

Russian media report that once again, Patriot missiles from the Ukrainian air defense ended up in districts of Kyiv after their launch. As reported, this time there is mention of at least 2 Patriot missiles. Reports are being published in Ukraine attributing the new failure of the Patriots to the "partners." According to these, the missiles were "old" and came from ammunition stocks that were intended for decommissioning. As a result, the use of the Patriots turns into an unpredictable "ordeal" for Ukraine, which can cause significant damage, just as happened during the past night.

Attacks in Sumy as well

Apart from Kyiv and its wider region, strikes were also recorded in Shostka of the Sumy region, as well as in the city of Sumy itself. Unmanned aerial vehicles and general-purpose guided bombs equipped with the UMPK system were used against targets in these areas. Similar bombs were also used for strikes against targets near the Oskil River, in the eastern part of the Kharkiv region, where the ground forces of the Russian army are conducting offensive operations against Ukrainian positions.222111.png

The Zelensky warning

It is noted that the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, had warned that Russia was preparing a new massive attack against Ukraine. The statement was made during his evening address as Supreme Commander of the Ukrainian armed forces. Zelensky connected the imminent Russian attack with the NATO Summit in Ankara on July 7, where the Ukrainian delegation will seek the strengthening of military and financial support from its partners, which—as he noted—Ukraine urgently needs. "Please, protect yourselves and pay attention to the air raid signals," Zelensky characteristically stated.433.png

For his part, the commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Robert Brovdi, also called on citizens to seek safe shelter during the night. Zelensky had previously announced a military response to the Russian strikes. As Zelensky claimed, the Kremlin seeks to project an image of victory in order to boost internal support in Russia, but, in the absence of real military successes, it continues to exert terrorist pressure against Ukraine.11_299.jpg
