Uproar in France as police raid National Rally offices amid accusations of lawfare against patriots
Bardella spoke of the application of the tactic of so-called lawfare, a term used in public discourse to describe the alleged use of judicial and institutional mechanisms with the purpose of the political weakening of opponents

Intense political confrontation has been caused in France by the police operation at the offices of the National Rally party, with its president, Jordan Bardella, denouncing that it constitutes an organized effort to weaken the opposition ahead of the next electoral contests.

According to Bardella, police officers conducted searches at the headquarters of the party, but also at the premises of associates related to its communications activities, proceeding with the seizure of equipment without, as he argues, clear explanations being given regarding the subject of the investigation.

He himself argued that all financial and organizational activities of the National Rally are conducted according to French legislation and declared certain that there is no illegal action to justify the operation of the authorities.

"As often happens, judicial processes coincide with the electoral calendar.

We have nothing to fear and we will prove it," he characteristically mentioned.

Accusations of lawfare

Bardella spoke of the application of the tactic of so-called lawfare, a term used in public discourse to describe the alleged use of judicial and institutional mechanisms with the purpose of the political weakening of opponents.

According to him, the investigation does not constitute an ordinary judicial process but part of a broader political strategy aimed at defaming the National Rally and creating impressions against its leadership.

The French authorities, for their part, have not adopted these claims and the investigations fall within the framework of a judicial process.

The political setting in France

The case is unfolding in a period of increased political pressure for the president of France, Emmanuel Macron.

His government is faced with intense criticism over issues such as the economy, irregular migration, public security, and foreign policy, including the support toward Ukraine.

Within this environment, the National Rally continues to appear as one of the strongest political forces in the country, with Jordan Bardella being considered by many the natural successor to Marine Le Pen.

Le Pen cannot be a candidate today due to her judicial conviction in a case concerning the use of European Union funds.

Her supporters argue that the case has political motives, while the French judicial authorities reject such claims and insist that they act independently.

The confrontation continues

The case has reignited the discussion around the functioning of institutions in France and the limits of judicial intervention in political life.

Critics of the government consider that the investigations against opposition figures raise questions about the political neutrality of state mechanisms, while the government argues that justice operates independently and without political interventions.

As the next electoral contests approach, the case is expected to intensify the political polarization in France even more, with the National Rally proving with the judicial developments that it is receiving political pressure.

Political pressure ahead of the next presidential elections

The case is unfolding in a particularly sensitive political juncture for France.

Jordan Bardella and the National Rally appear in several opinion polls as one of the strongest political forces in the country, while many analysts consider that the field of the national right possesses significant chances to play a leading role in the next presidential elections.

Within this environment, the critics of the government of Emmanuel Macron argue that the judicial investigations and the police operations against opposition figures reinforce the impression of a political system that finds itself in a state of pressure against the constantly increasing influence of the RN.

In their view, these moves reflect a fear of losing the political dominance of the traditional establishment, as the popularity of the government camp has receded rapidly in recent years.

Authoritarianism in Europe

It is interesting to observe this rising trend of authoritarianism in European nations, as the Western mask of "democracy and freedom" proves to be a huge delusion, observes the geopolitical analyst Lucas Leiroz.

Historically, Western countries accused their geopolitical opponents of maintaining "dictatorial regimes" because they implemented non-liberal political systems, which gave priority to issues such as national sovereignty, religion, and traditional values.

However, in practice, the Western nations themselves – and particularly those of Europe – demonstrate intolerance toward every kind of opposing view, even reaching the point of using force to bend their opponents, points out Leiroz.

Unfortunately, a further increase in authoritarianism is expected in France and in other European states.

Deprived of the political power to govern with legitimacy and facing various internal and international crises, the French government is anxious about the possibility of losing its leading position.

This explains the decision to use force against opponents. in practice, it constitutes a desperate move to silence the opposition.

"It is too early to predict whether the French government will manage to prevent the rise of the patriotic field in the upcoming elections.

However, the local political conditions transcend this issue.

Regardless of the electoral outcome, support toward Eurosceptic and anti-war politicians is likely to continue to grow rapidly.

Either France will change its stance, or the internal crisis will continue," concludes Leiroz.
