The United States is heading toward a historic fiasco... because of the heat.
A powerful heatwave without historical precedent has already caused serious disruptions to the Independence Day celebrations in the US, as hundreds of events were cancelled or postponed and power grids were placed under suffocating pressure due to the explosive demand for energy.
Cancellations of events across the country
Dnes of parades, concerts, and fireworks displays for the 4th of July were cancelled or rescheduled in many regions of the country, as the dangerous temperatures rendered outdoor gatherings dangerous for public health.
In cities such as Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, Haddon Township in New Jersey, and Watertown in New York, local authorities were forced to modify or completely cancel planned events.
In Washington, in fact, the "Great American State Fair" event at the National Mall was temporarily interrupted, when several visitors presented symptoms of heat exhaustion.
"Heat... dome" and extreme temperatures
Meteorologists attribute the phenomenon to a persistent "heat dome" – a high-pressure system that traps warm air masses over large areas for prolonged intervals.
This specific weather pattern led to temperatures that exceeded the seasonal average by 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit, while the heat index reached up to 115°F, without substantial coolness at night.
As Jonathan Porter, chief meteorologist of AccuWeather, mentioned, phenomena of this type are becoming increasingly frequent and intense:
"We have observed over the last decade that heat domes are becoming more powerful and are breaking records. There are indications that atmospheric blockages last longer in a warming climate, allowing heatwaves to persist for longer intervals."
Pressure on power grids
The explosive increase in demand for electricity – mainly due to the extensive use of air conditioners – led the grids to their limits.
The organization PJM Interconnection, which serves approximately 67 million consumers, activated emergency energy-saving measures to prevent generalized blackouts. The demand for electrical energy approached historically high levels, while restrictions on power exports to neighboring grids were even examined.
In New York, the company Con Edison restored power supply to tens of thousands of households after disruptions related to the heatwave, continuing however to call upon citizens to restrict consumption.
Protection measures and public health
Local authorities opened air-conditioned cooling centers, extended the hours of public pools, and created water provision points and misting stations for the relief of citizens.
Concurrently, health services recommended avoiding exposure to the sun, adequate hydration, and light clothing, while calling upon citizens to frequently check on the elderly and vulnerable groups.
Included among the heatstroke symptoms highlighted are dizziness, nausea, confusion, and intense sweating, with the authorities emphasizing that immediate medical intervention is required when these worsen.
Prolonged heatwave and storms
Forecasts show that the heatwave will continue throughout the weekend, with a potential shift of its intensity toward the southeastern states.
At the same time, meteorologists warn of potential severe storms in the Midwest and the Northeast, with risks from powerful winds, hail, and lightning, a fact that may compound the disruptions of events and the pressure on energy grids.
In case of extension of the extreme conditions, new cancellations of events, further burdening of the electrical system, and an increase in health incidents related to the heat are not ruled out.
