Moldova is facing major political turmoil, as prime minister Alexandru Munteanu unexpectedly announced his resignation, simultaneously leading to the dissolution of the government.
Alexandru Munteanu, who had assumed office in November 2025, cited personal principles as the reason for his decision, without providing further clarifications.
Sudden departure and political power vacuum
In his post on the platform X, he stated that his term as prime minister is coming to an end and that he can no longer exercise his office in a way that is consistent with his personal convictions.
The resignation of Alexandru Munteanu also implies the departure of the entire government format, creating a power vacuum in the country.
Pressure on Maia Sandu and the pro-European PAS
This development exerts new pressure on president Maia Sandu and on the pro-European party Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), which is in its second consecutive term.
According to the constitutional framework, Maia Sandu will begin consultations with the parliamentary parties for the appointment of a new prime minister candidate.
Munteanu and the European path of Moldova
Alexandru Munteanu, 62 years old, had been appointed prime minister following the victory of PAS against the pro-Russian party in the parliamentary elections of September 2025.
Before assuming the political leadership of the country, he had served as an executive in international organizations, including the World Bank.
Despite his resignation, he underlined that he remains committed to the European path of Moldova, at a time when the country continues to balance between different geopolitical influences.
Moldova, located between Ukraine and Romania, an EU member state, is a candidate for EU membership.
It has a Romanian-speaking majority and a large Russian-speaking minority, and political power has oscillated for decades between parties favoring closer relations with Europe and those seeking better relations with Moscow.
What Russia denounces
Russia and pro-Russian political and state media have repeatedly formulated accusations and criticisms against the pro-European government of Moldova under Maia Sandu, mainly within the context of the broader conflict of influence in the region.
Moscow has presented the government of Maia Sandu as a pro-Western leadership operating under the influence of the European Union and the USA, accusing it of distancing Moldova from "traditional cooperation" with Russia.
Russian authorities and representatives of the Kremlin have denounced that the government in Chișinău restricts pro-Russian parties and politicians, targets political opponents,
and creates a political environment characterized as "undemocratic" by the Russian side.
Russian officials have also accused the government of restricting the use of the Russian language in public institutions, and promoting policies of "Russophobia", especially after the turn toward the EU.
From Moscow's side, the pro-European path of Moldova is described as part of a broader Western strategy of encircling Russia, while Saidu is also denounced for causing deliberate tension in Transnistria.
