Loud warning from Russia - Greenland is turning into an advanced NATO base

A closed ring of bases is being created around Russia

Russia warns that the militarization of Greenland is continuing at a rapid pace, claiming it is being carried out under the guise of addressing a supposed growing Russian military threat. The Russian ambassador to Copenhagen, Vladimir Barbin, told Izvestia that the Arctic, which was previously a region of low tension and cooperation, is gradually turning into a zone of confrontation due to the actions of NATO. According to him, Denmark plans to deploy F-35 fighter jets to Greenland, while simultaneously promoting the acquisition of Arctic operation frigates, patrol vessels, transport and surveillance aircraft, as well as long-range drones.

Trump's claims continue to cause tensions

The confrontation surrounding Greenland, which was sparked by the claims of US President Donald Trump regarding the island, has not ended. According to Vladimir Barbin, the United States justifies its claims by arguing that Denmark has not given the required attention to the defense of Greenland.

"The militarization of the Arctic will continue"

Alexander Sporshev, a senior lecturer at the Department of European and International Law at the National Research University's Law School, estimates that the gradual militarization of the Arctic will continue over the next five years. As he points out, this development will not be expressed so much through a mass deployment of troops as through the creation of dual-use infrastructure, such as radar stations, surveillance systems and marine sensors, drones, airports, patrol aircraft, and naval forces.

Russia–NATO competition and China's growing interest

According to Sporshev, the military reinforcement of the Arctic is fueled mainly by the strategic competition between Russia and NATO, but also by China's increasingly greater interest in the region. For this reason, even a change of government in Washington or political reshuffles in Europe are unlikely to essentially alter the general strategic direction.

"A closed ring of bases is being created around Russia"

Pavel Anisimov, deputy director of the Institute of International Relations and Political Science at the Russian State Humanitarian University (RGGU), argued that the most significant risk for Moscow is the formation of a "closed ring" of military bases around northern Russia. As he told Izvestia, the expansion of American and NATO control in Greenland is part of a broader strategy of encircling Russia both in the Arctic and in the North Atlantic.
