Same Tsipras, different wrapper
Former New Democracy (ND) MP and Minister Christos Staikouras speaks about political developments and the economy on BNtv's MAGGA show. "The sign from the seven-year governance of New Democracy is positive, and Mitsotakis holds an advantage over his political opponents," he claims in response to journalist Angie Stathatou, though he admits mistakes were made. "I would like us all to be together," says Mr. Staikouras when asked about the absence of former Prime Ministers Antonis Samaras and Kostas Karamanlis, not only from the recent ND Congress but also from the video presented on the party's history: "We must be in favor of enlargement, but without New Democracy showing a lack of respect for its history," he states. Regarding Alexis Tsipras and his resurgence through the Hellenic Police (EL.AS), he comments that "the wrapper is different, but the essence is the same as what the Greek people experienced in practice," while also expressing reservations about what Maria Karystianou promises, without, as the former Finance Minister says, the necessary prerequisites being in place.
The stabilization of the Greek economy is a feat – "Yes" to further reduction of insurance contributions, "no" to the abolition of ENFIA
Macroeconomically, the Mitsotakis government has achieved a small feat, Christos Staikouras argues; however, he admits that there is still a long way to go to equalize the average living standards of Greeks with those of other European citizens. What does he say about VAT reduction and subsidies? Why can't the ENFIA property tax be abolished? The former tsar of the Greek economy talks about banks and the "increase in deposits by over 60 billion euros compared to 2019," but also about hidden and visible charges, credit expansion, and deposit yields—issues for which "there is room for interventions." He also raises the issue of an additional reduction in insurance contributions.
Mitsotakis' announcements for student housing remained just words
At a time when housing is becoming the main problem for Greek households, announcements by Kyriakos Mitsotakis have remained mere words for five years, such as the creation of 8,000 new student dormitories. Christos Staikouras explains the problem that arose with Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), while he also refers to the scandals involving OPEKEPE, Urban Planning, and Predator. What does he say about the "woke" agenda and the development of the regions?
