US President Donald Trump is preparing to order the Pentagon to utilize state funding and enter into contracts to bolster the coal-fired electricity production sector, Bloomberg reported, citing a White House source. The Reuters news agency notes that it was unable to immediately verify the information. The White House did not respond immediately when asked for comment on the report, while the Pentagon referred to the presidency for relevant statements.
Presidential Executive Order
According to Bloomberg, the decision will take the form of a presidential executive order, which is expected to be signed as early as today. With this, President Trump will call on Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to finalize agreements for the procurement of electricity from coal-burning plants, including for military operations.
175 million dollars for factory upgrades
Furthermore, Trump will present a Department of Energy plan for the granting of funding amounting to 175 million dollars to repair or upgrade six coal-burning electricity production plants in the states of Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia, according to Bloomberg. The White House also mentioned that it will organize events during the day to promote the use of "clean, beautiful coal" in energy production.
Coal industry leaders present
Leaders of coal mining and trading companies, as well as energy industry businesses, will be present at the White House during the tycoon's announcements, according to Bloomberg. Since returning to the White House in January 2025, the Republican president has signed executive orders to increase coal production, one of many decisions that contradict international efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat global warming.
