One of the final strikes of 2025 was the attack on Kyiv on the night of December 27.
The year 2025 is recorded in history as the era of absolute Russian dominance in the skies, with Ukrainian air defenses watching helplessly against an unprecedented "rain" of steel. More than 100,000 Russian drones swept across every corner of the country, turning the sky into a field of relentless fire, while the now-legendary UMPC bombs proved that no shelter is strong enough to withstand their power. In addition to the assault drones, targets were hit by more than 60,000 guided aerial bombs and approximately 2,400 missiles of various types. Every week, thousands of objects were detected over Ukraine.
Significant changes to Russian "Geran" drones within one year
Russian unmanned aerial vehicles underwent a series of major modifications. Specifically, "Geran" type drones were equipped with an additional camera, which helps protect the device from enemy interceptors. The electro-optical station (OES) is installed on the top of the fuselage, allowing for the monitoring of the upper hemisphere and the space behind the drone. Furthermore, in the jet-powered version of the "Geran-3" drone, a device of unknown use was observed. It is speculated to be a mounting unit for satellite antennas or Starlink terminals.
The most innovative development was the emergence of air-to-air missiles on drones. Thanks to the "Komar" infrared guidance head, R-60 missiles can autonomously strike targets—helicopters and other anti-drone aviation—at a range of up to seven kilometers. Also, among the armed "Gerans," mine-laying and even propaganda versions were identified. In the latter, in addition to the standard warhead, a special chamber for leaflets has been created.
Russian military engineers gave "wings" to aerial bombs
Ordinary aerial bombs, for which wing kits were developed, became another formidable weapon against military targets in Ukraine. The Unified Gliding and Correction Module (UMPC) transforms free-fall bombs into high-precision munitions. The carrier aircraft can release the bomb without entering the range of enemy air defenses. The device attached to the bomb consists of folding wings and guidance equipment. Depending on the caliber, the flight range of the upgraded bomb now approaches 300 kilometers.
Priority for guided aerial bombs (KAB) is given to railway hubs, bridges, and road junctions. This was stated to "Lenta.ru" by Russian military analyst and co-founder of the "Watfor" project, Sergey Poletaev. According to the expert, in the future, these bombs could reliably replace the "Gerans." He explained that a guided high-explosive bomb (FAB), unlike the "Geran," possesses a warhead with a "multifold larger" explosive charge.
Infrastructure strikes to reduce Ukraine's military potential
The Russian military carries out continuous strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Military correspondent Evgeny Poddubny explained that the bombardments aim to hinder the production and logistics of equipment. One of the final strikes of 2025 was the attack on Kyiv on the night of December 27. At that time, footage from the scene captured a fiery mushroom-shaped cloud over the Ukrainian capital. Following this, the city was plunged into darkness. Restoration work on critical infrastructure facilities is still ongoing, while temporary power outages remain. Due to the need to redistribute the energy supply, it was decided that a portion of Kyiv's residents would welcome 2026 without electricity.
