Moscow expresses its satisfaction with the invitation to the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, to attend the "Group of Twenty" (G20) summit, which is scheduled for December 14–15 in Miami. It was made clear that the invitation from the American side was accepted with satisfaction and that further details will be determined through diplomatic channels. Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that he personally delivered the invitation to the Russian leader, emphasizing that his participation would provide an important opportunity to organize a meeting with American President Donald Trump, as well as other foreign leaders.
Prerequisites for a Trump - Putin summit
Marco Rubio highlighted the hope that the invitation will be accepted provided the appropriate conditions exist in December. At the same time, he clarified that a personal meeting between the two leaders requires serious preparatory work to yield specific results, noting that so far no substantive discussion has taken place regarding the final face-to-face encounter. The possibility of the Russian president visiting the US had concerned international media outlets as early as April, when Donald Trump noted that the presence of his Russian counterpart would be useful, while expressing reservations as to whether it would ultimately materialize. Although American officials and diplomats confirmed during the summer that a signal was being sent for Russian representation at the highest level, the final decision remains in the balance.
The chances for Miami and the alternative rendezvous at APEC
According to recent information from international analysts, the probability of the Russian leader traveling to Florida for the G20 summit is considered extremely small. Instead, his personal participation is being planned for the APEC summit on November 18–19, where a trilateral summit between Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump, and Chinese President Xi Jinping is not ruled out.
