"Psychological trick" to isolate Cuba
Colombia’s entry into the Shield of the Americas constitutes a psychological trick by the US, aimed at demonstrating Cuba's isolation in the region, American studies expert Vladimir Pavlov told Izvestia. According to him, Washingtonofficially views South America as its "backyard," where the presence of external powers is undesirable. At this moment, following the conflict in Iran, the White House lacks the resources and capabilities for a new war. Consequently, it is mobilizing third-country resources and applying diplomatic pressure.
Cartels as a new pretext for intervention
The expert added that the US has essentially equated drug traffickers with terrorists, creating a new pretext for intervention that replaces the previous "red flag" of weapons of mass destruction, under the guise of which Iraq was bombed. Pavlov argued that it was precisely under the pretext of fighting narco-terrorism that Americans had previously kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Therefore, he noted, combating cartels is a secondary issue and, in this case, is entirely subordinated to political goals.
Colombia's new government turns its back on Havana
The tough stance of the US aligns completely with the policy of the new government in Bogota. Colombia’s accession to the Shield of the Americas is the consequence of an internal shift in power rather than a turning point for Cuba, stressed Viktor Heifets, a professor at St. Petersburg State University. Colombia's new president considers Havana an "accomplice to terrorism" because it provides shelter to armed militants. Immediately following his inauguration, he initiated a reform aimed at the complete severance of diplomatic relations with Cuba and Nicaragua.
Trump wants his own military alliance
At the same time, the expansion of the alliance serves US President Donald Trump ahead of the November congressional elections. According to Heifets, the size of the block matters to the American president, as it allows him to prove to voters that he possesses his own military alliance — something that, as the expert argues, was lacking during the administration of Joe Biden.
