The heavy shadow of a potential military conflict with Iran is now clearly reflected in the American defense budget of 2027, with the Trump administration being accused of concealing billions of dollars related to military operations in the Middle East. The Trump administration submitted the largest and most controversial defense package in the history of the USA, opening a fierce political and institutional war in Washington, against the backdrop of the elections of November and the fear of fiscal derailment.
Explosive increase in military spending
The new budget provides for total military spending amounting to 1.45 trillion dollars, aiming at the radical reconstruction of the American defense industry and the huge strengthening of sectors such as:
1) artificial intelligence,
2) drones,
3) space systems,
4) the shipbuilding industry,
5) and state-of-the-art weapons programs. Critics of the plan speak of financial paranoia, warning that the USA no longer possess the fiscal resilience for military investments of such magnitude. The Trump administration simultaneously seeks to transform the Pentagon into a basic state investor in the American weapons industry, creating, according to analysts, an extremely unstable and dangerous economic model.
Bypassing Congress
The most controversial element concerns the attempt of the administration to pass 350 billion dollars through the budget reconciliation process, meaning a partisan mechanism that limits the possibility of blocking by the Senate. The move has caused fierce reactions even inside the Republican Party, as it is considered a dangerous institutional bypass in an already deeply divided political juncture.
The hidden financing of the war with Iran
The largest political scandal, however, concerns the concealment of the real expenditures related to the operations against Iran. Although the administration has not officially integrated the cost of the war into the core budget, it is allegedly transferring silently the expenditures for the replenishment of missiles and weapons systems used in the operations against Tehran.
A report by the organization Taxpayers for Common Sense reveals impressive increases:
1) the expenditures for ammunition used in operation Epic Rage against Iran skyrocketed from 4.5 billion to 22 billion dollars,
2) the HIMARS program increased by 1,112%,
3) while the Tomahawk missiles of the Navy skyrocketed from 257 million to 3 billion dollars. Analysts denounce that the Trump administration stealthily integrates war expenses into the general state budget without an official political assumption of responsibility.
Golden Dome and military extravagance
At the center is also the ambitious missile defense program Golden Dome for America, a personal plan of Trump, for which 17.9 billion dollars are requested immediately. However, the Congressional Budget Office, CBO, estimates that the real cost of the program over a 20 year depth can reach 1.2 trillion dollars, while independent experts raise the amount even to 3.6 trillion dollars. Despite the warnings, officials of the administration dismiss the estimates, without presenting clear financial data.
Democrats: They are slaughtering social spending for the sake of the war
The Democrats launched a fierce attack against Trump, accusing him of sacrificing social services, health, and housing for the sake of an uncontrolled military agenda. The Democratic representative Brendan Boyle characteristically stated: Trump is asking for an unimaginable increase in military spending and wants to fund it by cutting health, housing, and social programs. He knows that the plan is deeply unpopular and is trying to pass it through a coup-like manner via partisan processes.
Anxiety even among Republicans
Even traditional figures of the Republicans appear cautious. Mitch McConnell warned that the unilateral use of the reconciliation process creates serious risks for the stability of American defense policy. The independent senator Angus King characterized the relevant item as a black fund without oversight.
The American military system in crisis
At the same time, military officials admit that the huge financing does not solve the structural problems of the USA against China. Admiral Paparo revealed that, despite the billions of dollars, the American shipbuilding industry represents just 0.1% of the global productive capacity, while China controls almost 50%. At the same time, experts characterize the new programs of drones and artificial intelligence as a technological gamble without clear strategic depth.
The fear of a new shock of 100 billion dollars
The biggest question now concerns the possibility of a new supplementary war budget for Iran. According to estimates, the White House may soon request an additional 80 to 100 billion dollars, triggering a new political and fiscal crisis in the USA. Analysts warn that the combination of:
1) uncontrolled military expenditures,
2) hidden war financing,
3) political division,
4) and explosive debt could transform the American budget of 2027 into one of the largest fiscal bombs in modern American history.
