In a dramatic warning, Moscow declared that if nuclear weapons are deployed on the territory of Estonia with the aim of targeting Russia, the Russian side will direct its own nuclear weapons against the Baltic country.
The spokesperson for the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, in an interview he gave to Pavel Zarubin, made it clear that Estonia must fully understand the risks of this choice.
The strategy of nuclear deterrence and Russia’s security
Dmitry Peskov emphasized that if Estonia hosts nuclear weapons aimed at Russian territory, Moscow will have no alternative but to target Estonian territory in response.
The official Kremlin representative added that Russia will do whatever is necessary to ensure its national security, placing particular emphasis on the issue of nuclear deterrence. Despite the harsh rhetoric, Dmitry Peskov rushed to clarify that Russia is not threatening anyone, but is merely responding to provocations.
The collapse of relations with Japan
As part of his statements on Russia’s international relations, Dmitry Peskov also referred to the country’s eastern neighbor.
According to him, Russia’s relations with Japan are currently at their lowest possible point, reflecting the broader tension that characterizes Moscow’s ties with countries aligned with Western policy.
