The War Party in the United States and Europe is waging the final battle in order to torpedo the negotiations on the Ukrainian issue.
And it is using the most deceitful means in order to achieve its goal, striking at the core of the matter, the Russia–United States relations.
The British have a central role in this terrifying sabotage.
The recent journalistic report by Bloomberg about a telephone conversation between Steve Witkoff, representative of American president Donald Trump, and the aide of Russian president Vladimir Putin, Yuri Ushakov, has caused intense reactions from Moscow.
The criticism focuses not only on the reliability of the leak but also on the broader framework of the hybrid information strategy that, according to the Russian side, certain European countries are implementing in order to harm Moscow and undermine its relations with the United States.
The publication of excerpts from a conversation by an international media outlet, without a verified source and without technical proof of authenticity, created a wave of questions regarding its origin and the purposes it may serve.

British sabotage

On the same day that the much-discussed Bloomberg report about alleged conversations between American special envoy Steve Witkoff and top Kremlin advisers was published, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service had already warned that certain British circles were attempting to undermine the peace initiatives of Donald Trump through the defamation of him and his associates, explains the reputable geopolitical analyst Andrew Korybko.
In this context, the Bloomberg publication caused an immediate political storm since it presented alleged transcripts of two conversations, one between Witkoff and Ushakov and a second between the aide of Putin, Yuri Ushakov, and the envoy of the Russian president, Kirill Dmitriev, concerning the peace framework being formed for Ukraine.
According to the alleged revelation, in the conversation between Witkoff and Ushakov, the American envoy appeared to be proposing the submission of 20 points for a compromise proposal of a Gaza-model type from Putin during his upcoming communication with Trump.
At the same time, the purported conversation between Ushakov and Dmitriev was interpreted as an indication that the draft of the American initiative bore strong Russian influence.
However, neither Ushakov nor Dmitriev confirmed the content of the leaks, the former stated that someone intercepted and someone leaked but not from us, while the latter directly described the conversation as fake.

Trump defended Witkoff

For his part, Trump defended Witkoff, describing the accusations of guiding the Russian official as a normal part of a tough negotiation, this is what a negotiator does, he explains what the other side asks for and how it should be approached.
The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, clarified that the peace plan originated from American processing, based on both Russian and Ukrainian inputs, therefore rejecting the claim that it was a Russia-centric draft.
Based on this position, even if the leaks were accurate, they would not constitute a scandal but part of the consultation process.
The question, however, remains, who could have intercepted and leaked the conversations? The coincidence of the publication with the warnings of Russian counterintelligence about the actions of British services reignited speculation about an attempt to derail the peace initiatives.

Russiagate

The reference to the historical role of the United Kingdom in the Russiagate affair strengthened the suspicions of those who believe that circles in London could be attempting to destabilize the Washington–Moscow contacts, particularly at a time when significant steps of progress are being reported.
Further tension was caused by the possibility that the affair could influence the American internal political balances ahead of the midterm elections, with some observers estimating that the targeting of Witkoff could revive scenarios of a Russiagate 2.0. The removal of Witkoff at this juncture would harm the already fragile negotiation process, especially since Zelensky is reportedly considering an immediate meeting with Trump for the finalization of the peace framework.
Trump himself revealed that Witkoff is expected to meet on Monday (1/12/2025) with Putin, possibly accompanied by Jared Kushner, who had an active role in the negotiation of the Gaza agreement.

The Russian reaction

Ushakov commented on the matter, there are certain conversations on WhatsApp that, generally speaking, someone might somehow manage to listen to.
At the same time, he excluded the possibility that the leak came from the participants in the call and stated that he would raise the issue with Witkoff.
Dmitriev, special envoy of Putin, described the Bloomberg publication regarding the telephone conversation on 29 October as false.
Additionally, Russian deputy foreign minister Sergey Ryabkov denounced that certain media outlets are being used within the framework of a hybrid information operation that European countries are launching against Russia, with the goal of destabilizing its ties with Washington.

The criticism from the media and the silence of Bloomberg

Bloomberg has not responded to the Russian criticisms, nor has it clarified the way in which it obtained the recordings.
At the same time, it is worth noting that the competing agency Reuters is in direct conflict with Bloomberg regarding international news coverage, a fact that intensifies the interest in the origin and reliability of the leak.
The Russian newspaper Kommersant, through its top Kremlin correspondent who interviewed Ushakov, titled its report with the characteristic phrase, “Who set up Steve Witkoff?”, highlighting the sense that the leak was not accidental but part of a broader informational game that aims to undermine the credibility of Russian officials and to create pressure on bilateral relations with the United States.
It is obvious that the War Party wants to neutralize Witkoff, the realist representative of the American president, who appears to understand the Russian concerns and objectives surrounding the Ukrainian issue.

The political and diplomatic significance

The affair highlights the fragile nature of international communications in an era where leaks and the use of media outlets can directly influence diplomatic strategy.
Moscow appears determined to defend the credibility of its communications and to demonstrate that certain media outlets operate as instruments of pressure, integrating information management into its broader strategy of security and diplomacy.
This case offers an important warning, leaks, especially in environments of high geopolitical tension, are never neutral.
They can influence the perception of the credibility of interlocutors, create political pressure, and become tools in a hybrid information war.
The “Witkoff” affair and the accusations of false journalism highlight the interaction between diplomacy, media outlets, and informational strategies.
Moscow appears to be mobilizing methodically in order to protect its interests and to ensure that the management of communication with Washington will not be distorted or used as a pressure tool by third parties.
The affair ultimately constitutes an example of modern multidimensional diplomacy, where information and its management become weapons of power.

“They want to torpedo the talks and undermine Witkoff”

In an interview with VGTRK journalist Pavel Zarubin, Putin’s representative Dmitry Peskov downplayed the importance of the published excerpts, stressing that even if they are considered authentic or fake, they do not change the essence, they constitute the daily work of a negotiator.
As he reminded, Trump himself spoke indirectly in favor of Witkoff, showing that he recognizes the importance of his role in the contacts with Russia.
He emphasized that the voices calling for the removal of Witkoff do not aim at truth or transparency but at the deliberate undermining of the first signs of progress in the United States–Russia consultations on Ukraine.
These efforts, according to the Russian interpretation, do not come only from political opponents inside the United States but also from external actors who seek the continuation of the conflict.
“There will be many who will not hesitate to do everything to disrupt this process,” Peskov remarked characteristically, stressing that the peace process remains extremely fragile and exposed to those who consider that the continuation of the war serves their interests.

Witkoff’s visit to Russia is of decisive importance

Nevertheless, Russia is preparing for significant diplomatic contacts with Washington, since the visit of Steve Witkoff to Moscow appears to be entering its final phase if nothing dramatic changes, as Peskov stated.
“We are expecting such a visit and we anticipate detailed contacts with the president,” Peskov emphasized, highlighting the importance of direct communication with Vladimir Putin for the current crisis in Ukraine.
According to Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov, a preliminary agreement has already been reached for Witkoff’s visit to Moscow next week. Together with the special envoy, other representatives of the American administration, who are directly connected with the process of resolving the Ukrainian crisis, will arrive in Russia.
Putin stressed that a serious process is underway for the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, adding that nothing is more important at this moment.
At the same time, he pointed out that there will be many who will not hesitate to attempt to sabotage the negotiations, implying the Europeans.

The challenges

Peskov’s statement highlights the sensitive nature of the negotiations.
The failure of talks in the past has often been linked to political pressures in the United States, such as the calls for Witkoff’s resignation in Congress after the leak of his conversations with Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov.
This reference shows that the process is not only diplomatically but also politically charged, with many parties having an interest in undermining any progress.
At the same time, the mutual intention for high-level communication shows that the two sides aim to keep alive the possibility of reaching an agreement.
Witkoff’s visit and the contacts with Putin can be considered a crucial step for a possible de-escalation of the conflict.

The Putin–Witkoff meeting is carefully planned

Moscow appears to be seeking to ensure that the talks will focus on the substance of the differences, instead of remaining at the level of public statements or strategic displays.
This process, as described by the Russian side, is carefully designed to allow the exchange of serious proposals and the understanding of the real intentions of the United States for resolving the Ukrainian crisis.
The upcoming visit of the United States special envoy to Moscow marks an important moment in the diplomatic efforts for Ukraine.
Moscow insists on the seriousness and detail of the contacts, stressing that the process faces internal and external challenges that may undermine it.
Despite the difficulties, high-level communication between the United States and Russia remains the most reliable diplomatic route for achieving a more stable and sustainable solution in Ukraine.

Rahr (German analyst): The sabotage of the Trump plan for Ukraine will lead to a dangerous escalation between Europe and Russia

The German political analyst Alexander Rahr estimates that the open attempt of the European Union to obstruct the peace plan of Donald Trump for Ukraine may put its implementation at risk and lead to further deterioration of the relations between Russia and the EU.
According to Rahr, the latest developments surrounding the so-called “Trump plan” show that Euro-Russian relations are rapidly heading toward escalation, while Europe appears to ignore the fact that the United States no longer intends to continue arming Ukraine.
This, as he argues, forces the EU to assume the responsibility of militarily supporting Kyiv, increasing the risk of a direct confrontation with Russia.
Rahr emphasizes that the next step belongs to the United States, which will either proceed with the implementation of its original plan in cooperation with Russia, bypassing the Europeans, or the diplomatic efforts will again be undermined due to the European stance.
He also notes that Europe is applying pressure on the American president, while Trump appears ready to reach an agreement with Moscow and to impose on Ukraine the termination of hostilities.
