Intense concern has been caused in Washington by the sudden appearance of a Russian military intelligence-gathering ship just a few miles from the coast of Hawaii.
According to an announcement by the US Coast Guard, the Russian ship Kareliya was found within breathing distance of US territorial waters, only 15 nautical miles south of the island of Oahu, on 29 October.
After the vessel was spotted, a helicopter and ship of the US Coast Guard were immediately mobilized, closely monitoring its every move.
It is considered one of the most specialized electronic intelligence ships of the Russian Navy, intended precisely for operations near critical areas of foreign powers.
The fear of a major provocation
The US Coast Guard confirmed that it is acting “according to international law,” monitoring and preventing any potential violation of US territorial waters, which begin at 12 nautical miles.
The timing and location of the Russian vessel’s appearance have sparked intense concern, as the Hawaii region constitutes a key strategic point for the US defense architecture in the Pacific.
Many analysts believe that Russia is attempting to test the limits of US tolerance or even gather critical military information.
The head of operations of the Coast Guard in the area, Matthew Chong, emphasized that “the USA continuously monitors every foreign military activity” and that the incident is being handled with full readiness and cooperation between the USA and its allies.
Silence from the Russian side
The Russian Embassy in Washington has not made any comment, leaving a veil of mystery hanging over the presence of the “ghost spy ship” at the US border.
The incident fits into a broader context of rising tensions between Moscow and Washington, with many media outlets now openly speaking of a new era of Cold War confrontation.
The bold presence of a Russian military vessel so close to US territory only strengthens concerns about a dangerous escalation in the Pacific.
