The Japanese government assured today, Friday, 14/11, that its position regarding Taiwan, an island that Beijing considers a Chinese province, remains "unaltered," following statements by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi that provoked a strong reaction from China.

"Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are essential for Japan's security. The Japanese government always desires that issues related to Taiwan be resolved peacefully through dialogue," said Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara.

Last week, Ms. Takaichi stated during a speech in the Japanese parliament that in the event of a military attack by China on Taiwan, the deployment of Japanese troops to defend the island would be justified under "collective self-defense."
