Panic in the US over terrorist threat at Air Force One base - White powder in package causes hospitalizations

Several individuals were transferred to the Malcolm Grove Medical Center, located within the US military base facility.

An alert is in effect in the US over a terrorist threat at the military base of the presidential aircraft, Air Force One. A suspicious package containing white powder delivered to a US military base in Maryland caused illness in several individuals and led to some being hospitalized, CNN reported. According to the report, a building on the base was evacuated after a person opened the package, as stated in an announcement from Joint Base Andrews, just outside Washington.
"As a precautionary measure, the building and the associated area were evacuated, and a safety zone was established," the base clarified in the statement. Several individuals were transferred to the Malcolm Grove Medical Center, within the facility. Their health status was not known at the time of the publication, according to Reuters.

The base where Air Force One is stationed

Joint Base Andrews is widely known as the base where Air Force One, the US presidential aircraft, is stationed. CNN, citing two sources familiar with the matter, reported that the package contained an unknown white substance. The base's first responders assessed that there was no immediate threat, and the investigation was subsequently taken over by the Office of Special Investigations. A field test by the HAZMAT specialized team did not detect a dangerous substance, but the investigation is ongoing, according to the same sources. The area where the envelope was opened—in a building housing the Air National Guard Readiness Center—remains closed. The Department of Defense and Joint Base Andrews did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters, which was unable to independently confirm the information.
