War is coming to the US with the victory of the "communist" Mamdani in New York - Trump: "We lost because I wasn't on the ballot"

The victory in New York is a blueprint for how the forces of "oligarchy and authoritarianism" pulsating across the country can be defeated, said Mamdani.
War is coming to the US after the victory of Zohran Mamdani in the mayoral race for New York City.

New York will be the light in the political darkness we are experiencing, argued the city's new mayor—and the city's first Muslim mayorZohran Mamdani, who launched a scathing attack on US President Donald Trump.
With 97% of the votes counted, Mamdani, representing the left wing of the Democrats, received 50.4% of the vote, leaving the centrist Democrat Andrew Cuomo in second place with 41.6% and the Republican Curtis Sliwa with 7.1%.

Mamdani's victory is considered a political defeat for Trump, who had asked American voters to support his candidate and raise a "wall" against the Muslim Mamdani.
"Any Jew who votes for Zohran Mamdani (...) is an idiot," Trump had stated, accusing Mamdani of "hating Jews."

All-out attack on Trump

During his speech after the election victory, Mamdani referred to President Trump several times.
After noting that New York will be the light in the political darkness the US is experiencing, he called on Trump to turn up the volume.
"Hear me, President Trump, when I tell you this," Mamdani said, addressing Trump: "To get to any one of us, you have to go through all of us first."

Mamdani presented his "new brave course" for the nation's largest city as a blueprint for how the forces of "oligarchy and authoritarianism" pulsating across the country can be defeated.
"After all, if there is anyone who can show a nation, betrayed by Donald Trump, how to beat him, it is the city that gave birth to him," he said, sending a message to the president: "Donald Trump, since I know you are watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up."

Trump: ...This is how it begins

The response from the US President was immediate, writing on his TruthSocial account: "...AND THIS IS HOW IT BEGINS!"

Mamdani attacked Trump several times, as Trump had threatened during the campaign period to even withdraw funds from New York if the "communist Mamdani" won.
In a desperate, last-minute attempt to keep Mamdani out of the mayor's office, Trump had supported Cuomo, a former Democratic governor and once a political rival.

For everyone

During his speech, Mamdani thanked his supporters and volunteers, pledging to fight for all New Yorkers and make the city more affordable for everyone.
"Tonight, against all odds, we conquered it," he said. "The future is in our hands."
The crowd of hundreds of people erupted in applause and cheers. The atmosphere was electrified and full of energy, as people embraced, raised fists in the air, and recorded the speech on their mobile phones.
As Mamdani enumerated his pledges—among them, providing universal child care, fast and free buses, freezing rent increases for those living in rent-stabilized housing, and others—the crowd responded with deafening applause.
Supporters wore campaign merchandise, such as yellow baseball caps, t-shirts, and beanies. "Tonight we spoke with a clear voice — hope is alive," Mamdani said.

New York is the light

Mamdani also pledged to change not only the mayor's office but the entire country.
"In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light," said the 34-year-old Mamdani, who argued that "when we enter the mayor's office in 58 days, expectations will be high. And we will meet them."
"Our greatness will be anything but abstract," Mamdani underlined.

Born in Uganda, the child of a family of Indian intellectuals, an immigrant to the US at the age of 7, an American citizen since 2018, Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), focused his campaign on the high cost of living in the metropolis and became extremely popular among young people.

Trump: We lost because I wasn't on the ballot

Referring to the Republican political losses not only in New York but also in local elections in other areas such as New Jersey and Virginia, Trump said these were due to his own non-participation in any of them and the prolonged fiscal paralysis in the US.
"The fact that Trump was not on the ballot and the fiscal paralysis are the two reasons why the Republicans lost the elections tonight, according to pollsters," Trump said.

Local elections

The Democrats swept the first major elections of the Trump term, bringing to light a new generation of leaders and giving the struggling party a dose of momentum ahead of next year's parliamentary elections.
Beyond New York, in Virginia and New Jersey, the moderate Democrats Spanberger (46 years old) and Sherrill (53 years old), respectively, won the gubernatorial elections by a wide margin.
Specifically, Abigail Spanberger, who defeated Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, will replace Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin in Virginia.
Mikie Sherrill from New Jersey defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli and will succeed Democratic Governor Phil Murphy.
Both Sherrill and Spanberger sought to link their opponents to Trump in order to capitalize on the frustration of Democratic and independent voters over the turmoil of his term.
"We sent a message to the world that in 2025 Virginia chose pragmatism over partisanship," Spanberger said in her victory speech. "We chose our Commonwealth over anarchy."

Barometer

Analysts estimate that Tuesday's elections served as a barometer for how Americans are reacting to the nine months of the Trump presidency.
Furthermore, they provided an indication of the Democratic electoral plans ahead of 2026. Nevertheless, the intermediate elections are still a year away, and polls show that the Democratic brand remains generally unpopular, even if Trump's approval has fallen.
It is also pointed out that these electoral contests took place in areas that traditionally favor Democrats and did not support Trump in the 2024 presidential elections.
However, they are estimated to be able to revitalize the Democratic base and inspire Democratic voters who are calling for new faces at the forefront of the party.

The message from California

The biggest boost for Democrats on Tuesday came, however, from California, where voters gave Democratic lawmakers the power to redraw the state's congressional electoral map, thus expanding a national battle over redistricting—a process that will shape the race for the US House of Representatives.
All three Democratic candidates emphasized economic issues, a topic that remains primary for most voters.
