The surprise visit of Dmitriev to the U.S. – Putin’s envoy holds talks with American officials
The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil.
A close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently in the United States for “official” talks, just days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced tough new sanctions against Russia.
According to CNN, Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and a special envoy of the Kremlin, is expected to meet with officials from the Trump administration “to continue discussions regarding U.S.–Russia relations,” according to the same sources.
“The visit comes amid growing frustration in Washington over the Kremlin’s refusal to end the war in Ukraine and after Trump declared that he had ‘canceled’ the planned summit with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin,” CNN noted.

Trump’s sanctions on Russia

On Wednesday, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil giants, Rosneft and Lukoil, calling on Moscow to agree to an immediate ceasefire in its war with Ukraine.
Putin stated that the sanctions would have little impact on the Russian economy, describing them as an attempt to pressure Moscow.
“No country that respects itself ever acts under pressure,” he said on Thursday.
The Russian leader added that, during a conversation with Trump, he had warned that the sanctions would affect global oil prices, including those in the United States.

Dmitriev’s role

In April, Dmitriev became the first Russian official to visit Washington since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
At that time, his visit — during which he met with Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff — was viewed as a significant step during a warming phase in relations between the Kremlin and the White House.
The U.S. government temporarily lifted sanctions on Dmitriev so that the State Department could issue him a visa to travel to the United States, as a CNN source revealed in April.
