Israel Unit 8200 accused of stoking Greek-Turkish tensions

Israel Unit 8200 accused of stoking Greek-Turkish tensions
How Tel Aviv manipulates algorithms on Facebook and WhatsApp to engineer artificial chaos in the Eastern Mediterranean

An invisible, perilous web of hybrid warfare, technological manipulation, and geopolitical pressure is spreading over the wider region of the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, at the exact moment global constants collapse and humanity confronts the darkest dimension of power.
From the depths of Meta's algorithms and the covert operations of Israeli intelligence agencies, the indicators of total destabilization are now visible to the naked eye.
Are you among those who cannot live without Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp?
If so, the reality lurking behind your mobile screen ought to terrify you.
According to Uzay Cendir, a columnist for Milliyet and one of the prominent voices of the Turkish deep state, Meta, the parent corporation of these platforms, employs more than 100 individuals hailing directly from the notorious cyberwarfare division of the IDF, Unit 8200.
These personnel are not rank-and-file workers, but occupy managerial posts, shaping the worldwide policies of the social media giant.
The dossier brought to light by The Grayzone in April 2025 exposes key figures pulling the strings.
Prominent among them is Shira Anderson, who led the Meta division determining how global artificial intelligence algorithms evaluate content, categorizing it as «hazardous» or «terrorist».
Anderson, having benefited from a foreign recruitment pipeline into the Israeli military, served during the Gaza Genocide as an IDF non-commissioned officer, drafting propaganda materials in the Military Strategic Information Unit and facilitating liaison with foreign defense attachés.
As soon as the controversial activities of Israeli intelligence operatives at Meta began triggering scrutiny, she pivoted to artificial intelligence firm OpenAI.
Yet she is hardly an isolated figure. Guy Rosen, who likewise served in Unit 8200, directed safety, content moderation, and election integrity policies globally for Meta across multiple years, before announcing his departure in June 2026 to assume an advisory portfolio within Israel's high-tech and artificial intelligence ecosystem.
Guy Schenkerman, with over a decade of service in Israeli intelligence bodies, stepped into a directorship inside Meta's engineering division in 2022.
Mickey Rothschild, commander of the Moran Unit during the Second Intifada (which directed long-range missile strikes), took senior executive positions within data science and artificial intelligence at the company.
Concurrently, Maksim Shmukler, a real-time software engineer in Unit 8200 from 2005 to 2011, transitioned to Meta via Google and Apple, while Eyal Klein, a former Captain and R&D Head inside Unit 8200, served as Head of Data Science for Meta's Core Messaging Group, before moving as Vice President of Data and AI to Opendoor.
This hyper-concentration of former Israeli intelligence operatives clarifies the deeply contested algorithmic framework, under which AI-driven mechanisms scrub 94% of posts deemed offensive to Israel in under sixty seconds.

Suspicious surge

Concurrently, a suspicious surge of frictions, disputes, and threats between Turkey, Greece, and Greek Cypriots is unfolding on Meta platforms, alongside a barrage of hostile messaging directed against Baku.
The question is unyielding: who gains from this synthetic turmoil?
The indicators point to Israel.
How else can one explain why an incendiary post by a nationalist figure in Greece, commanding less than 1% support, ends up elevated across the feeds of millions of Turkish citizens, asks Uzay Cendir.
While judicial proceedings concerning shadowy operations by the Mossad unfold in Athens, Greek authorities appear entirely oblivious to this massive influence operation across social networks.
Israel, unable to risk a direct military confrontation with Turkey, leverages its most potent lever: not its Prime Minister, who confronts charges of genocide, but the platforms upon which the public remains hooked.
International accounts raise chilling questions regarding how an Israeli tech firm breached WhatsApp software, precipitating the targeting and assassination of Palestinians participating in messaging groups alongside suspect contacts.
Who funneled these critical data streams to Unit 8200?
It is hardly coincidental that in June 2026, the DIA of the US Department of Defense elevated its counterintelligence alert posture regarding Israel to the tier of «critical» concern.
The addiction to metadata is now being paid in blood.

Fire on the geopolitical chessboard

Simultaneously, the geopolitical chessboard is catching fire, with prominent commentator Murat Yetkin warning of an impending geopolitical and geo-economic retreat for Turkey.
The financial market and banking strain in the neighboring country may not immediately disintegrate its macroeconomy, but it directly impacts half a million people and indirectly hits millions more, generating domestic political turbulence that rattles President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Tragedies follow one another: the death of five additional coal miners in Soma due to inadequate oversight and territorial retreat regarding the Cyprus issue are overshadowed by economic suffocation.
The authentic geo-economic hazard facing Ankara, argues Murat Yetkin, is the decision of the European Union to condition trade integration and non-member «phased integration» status upon rigorous alignment with foreign policy directives.
The aspirations generated at the NATO Summit in Ankara in July and the Mecca Agreement alongside Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in August dissipated following the UN General Assembly in late September.
The military encircling of Turkey in Cyprus has become tangible.
On October 1, during the 66th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus, an unprecedented military parade was staged in the Greek Cypriot sector before President Nikos Christodoulides, conveying an unmistakable, aggressive signal toward Turkey. Participating in the parade were:
Greece, with the 950th regiment of ELDYK, armored fighting vehicles, the frigate «Nikiforos Fokas», and F-16 Viper fighter aircraft forward-deployed to Paphos (the very airframes Turkey fruitlessly struggles to acquire from the US).
The US, fielding an honor guard of 17 personnel from the warship USS Roosevelt anchored offshore.
France, with a contingent of 22 Marines and H145M military helicopters, jointly developed alongside Germany.
The United Kingdom, featuring a 22-strong ceremonial contingent and a 21-member military band.
Egypt, with a 19-member Guard contingent and a CASA CN-295 military transport aircraft.
Concurrently, a public rollout of Israeli Barak MX air defense missiles was staged, affirming Tel Aviv's deep military footprint.

The European Union faces strain...

According to Murat Yetkin, the European Union, strained by Russia's war in Ukraine, the administration of Donald Trump in the US, escalating defense procurement, a fresh energy crunch stemming from the US-Israeli clash with Iran, and trade barriers toward Russian and Chinese markets, is tightening the vise.
During the Brussels summit on October 13, titled «Unlocking the Potential of the EU-Turkey Economic Partnership», the European Commission clarifies that for Turkey to preserve its access to the EU single market (especially regarding automotive exports), it must bend to Brussels' foreign policy mandates.
The Cyprus question is turning into a new «Ukraine» for Turkey.
Domestically within Turkey, the climate is explosive.
Chronic economic turmoil, high living costs, and joblessness are aggravated by spiking energy tariffs.
At the same time, perceived injustice mounts: while figures from the governing AKP implicated in financial turmoil, such as Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya, remain shielded from scrutiny, opposition municipal mayors are arrested during dawn raids on their homes.
On the external ledger, Turkey's ties with Russia have chilled following the NATO summit, while Ankara has placed «all its eggs in one basket» with Donald Trump.
Yet despite warm rhetoric, zero tangible momentum has materialized regarding the contentious F-35 procurement.
The lone critical linchpin bridging domestic decline and foreign hazards remains the «Terror-Free Turkey» process.
Even if the executive branch claims matters are progressing smoothly, no verifiable progress is observable.
The geopolitical game for Turkey has arrived at razor-thin margins, and the clock is winding down.
