War alarm in Greece: Patriot system urgently repositioned to Souda, terror over Iranian threats against US bases in Europe
Greek Pentagon on high alert – Strengthening Crete's air defense under consideration – How Athens responds regarding Patriot units for Bulgaria
The Ministry of National Defense is evaluating the potential redeployment of the Patriot missile battery currently stationed on Karpathos since last March to Souda Bay, as the widening escalation in the Middle East reshapes security dynamics for critical Greek and US military installations. This potential movement acquires added urgency following reports from the Financial Times indicating that Iran may be reviewing retaliatory options against American targetsacross Europe should US military operations intensify further. Given these emerging threat vectors, Souda Bay, owing to its vital strategic location and extensive US presence, has moved to the forefront of Greek defense planning.

Patriot to Souda if threat level escalates

According to military sources, transferring the missile battery from Karpathos to Crete remains an option under active evaluation rather than a finalized command, subject to real-time threat assessment protocols. Should incoming security intelligence indicate a heightened threat level surrounding Souda, the Patriot air defense unit will be relocated to Crete to fortify regional missile defense coverage. The Greek defense establishment is effectively managing a strategic balance between maintaining robust air defense across the eastern Aegean and securing Souda, one of the most vital strategic installations in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Patriot deployment to Bulgaria under review – No final decision yet

Concurrently, no official determination has been reached regarding the deployment of Greek Patriot units to Bulgaria, according to sources within the Ministry of Defense. However, should Sofia submit a formal request seeking Greece's assistance to safeguard Bulgarian airspace with Greek Patriot batteries, the matter will be submitted to the Government Council for National Security (KYSEA). Athens has not ruled out the proposal, but no binding decision has been enacted to deploy Greek air defense assets into Bulgarian territory.

F-16 fighters and frigate remain deployed in Cyprus

At the same time, Greek military assets assigned to Cyprus under existing operational frameworks remain fully forward-deployed. These force elements comprise four F-16 fighter jets and the frigate Nikiforos Fokas, with defense authorities continuously monitoring volatile regional developments. The ongoing deployment of Greek forces in Cyprus forms part of Athens' broader defense posture amid geopolitical instability across the Eastern Mediterranean and sustained Middle East tensions.

Souda in focus – A new reality for Greek national defense

The primary focus for Athens centers on protecting key defense infrastructure that could become vulnerable during an expanded regional conflict. Souda Bay represents the most prominent objective, given that its host capacity for US forces and operational support role make it a pivotal hub for power projection. Consequently, defense planners in Athens are recalibrating contingencies, with the potential transfer of the Patriot battery from Karpathos to Crete serving as a primary scenario should the risk profile for Souda Air Base escalate.

Potential attacks on US targets in Europe

According to reportage by the Financial Times, Iran has reviewed targeting options against US military positions in Europe if the Trump administration escalates offensive operations. Two regime insiders informed the Financial Times that Iranian commanders have examined strikes against US-hosted facilities in Southeastern Europe, including Bulgaria, which recently approved US refueling operations at Bezmer Air Base.

Cyprus also in the frame

One of the sources added that Cyprus, where a British military facility was struck by a drone in March, is also listed among prospective retaliatory targets in the event of new US military strikes. The same sources noted that Iranian forces have independently evaluated options to target subsea fiber-optic cables near the Strait of Hormuz during an escalation.

Iranian military warning to Gulf states: Do not assist the Americans, you will be deemed complicit

Ali Abdollahi, Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces, warned Persian Gulf nations against offering operational support to US forces, asserting that nothing evades Iranian intelligence. In statements published by Iran's Fars News Agency, Abdollahi stressed that the heavy concentration of military aircraft—particularly aerial refueling tankers—at regional airbases cannot occur without host nation awareness. "Countries along the southern coast of the Persian Gulf, which issue various statements claiming they do not allow the US to use their territory against Iran, must understand that nothing escapes our oversight. The presence of such large numbers of military aircraft, especially aerial refueling tankers, at bases in the region could hardly occur without the knowledge of their host countries. We issue a clear warning: providing any assistance or facilitation to the attacking US military is equivalent to participating alongside US armed forces," Abdollahi stated.
