Cyprus sets Greece on fire with a stunning move: The bases of death must go - No involvement with Iran, and the humiliation of Britain and Trump
Nicosia plans to officially open the issue as soon as the war in Iran is terminated, as confirmed by a top diplomat of the country.

Cyprus, as it became known on Monday, June 1, seeks to block the utilization of the sovereign military facilities of Great Britain on its territory by the American President, Donald Trump, for offensive operations in the Middle East, demanding official assurances from the United Kingdom in the event of the rise of Farage to the premiership. Specifically, according to revelations by Politico, Cypriot diplomacy expresses intense concern over the stance that a future British government under the right-wing party Reform UK, which leads in the polls, will maintain. Nicosia plans to officially open the issue as soon as the war in Iran is terminated, as confirmed by a top diplomat of the country. Furthermore, Cyprus desires legally binding safety valves so that future occupants of Downing Street cannot unilaterally grant the right to conduct airstrikes from the island.

How Iran affects the stance that Cyprus maintains

The current crisis was triggered by the balances that took shape during the preceding months in the Middle East. It is recalled that, in March, the British Prime Minister, Starmer, refused to allow the USA the use of the airbases for offensive strikes against Iranian targets, approving their activity exclusively for the specific and limited defensive purpose of intercepting attacks. However, Nicosia is concerned that a government under Farage, who is a close ally of Donald Trump and had initially favored offensive strikes before expressing reservations about a new war, could overturn this policy. Although the British parliamentary elections are scheduled for 2029, after the completion of the term of Donald Trump in 2028, Reform UK is preparing for the possibility of an early ballot due to the attrition of the Labour party. The party signals that Great Britain must maintain absolute control of its military infrastructure.

Indeed, a spokesperson for Reform UK stated:

"Reform UK supports the ongoing strategic importance of the British bases in Cyprus and the sovereign right of Britain to decide on their use. Farage has made it absolutely clear that Britain must not be dragged into unnecessary foreign wars, but neither should we pretend that we can project power abroad after years of Labour and Conservative cuts to our armed forces."

The attack on Akrotiri and the reactions

It is pointed out that Cyprus gained its independence in 1960, but London imposed the retention of its sovereignty over the territories in Akrotiri and Dhekelia. This status constitutes a permanent point of friction, with the situation escalating dramatically on March 2, when an Iranian unmanned aerial vehicle struck the RAF base in Akrotiri, in the wake of the American-Israeli campaign. Nicosia exercised severe criticism toward London for the complete lack of early warning to the residents and for the problematic sharing of intelligence. The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, reacted immediately by demanding talks on the future of the colonial bases, while he also received the support of European partners. At the March summit, the European Council underlined that it "recognizes the intention of Cyprus to begin a discussion with the United Kingdom on the British bases in Cyprus and stands ready to provide assistance as required."
