Greek military involvement in Middle East shock: Patriot battery in Saudi Arabia intercepts two Iranian ballistic missiles

A battery of Greek Patriot missiles stationed in Saudi Arabia shot down two Iranian ballistic missiles on Thursday morning

Greece is sinking deeper into the Middle East war, as the Greek presence in the region transitions from a stage of deterrence to one of direct involvement. A battery of Greek Patriot missiles, stationed in Saudi Arabia, intercepted two Iranian ballistic missiles on the morning of Thursday (19/3/2026). Beyond the celebrations within the Greek government regarding the high operational readiness of the Air Force personnel, the downing of Iran's ballistic missiles places Athens directly opposite Tehran, with all the risks that this may entail.

The HNDGS announcement

According to an official statement, the Greek Patriot air defense systems were activated following a threat alert, and two missiles were launched. "It is made known that on Thursday, March 19, 2026, during the morning hours, the Guided Missile Battery PATRIOT of the Hellenic Force Saudi Arabia (ELDYSA), within the framework of its participation in the international 'Integrated Air Missile Defense (IAMD) Concept' mission to support the air defense of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, fired 2 missiles and intercepted 2 ballistic missile targets respectively, in accordance with the standing Rules of Engagement. The force continues its mission as normal," the HNDGS statement reports.

Dendias: The target was Saudi Arabian oil refineries

Regarding the success of the Greek military forces, specifically ELDYSA, the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, stated: "the Greek Patriot battery in Saudi Arabia intercepted two Iranian ballistic missiles that had targeted Saudi Arabian refineries. In this way, ELDYSA proved how battle-ready it is and the experience gained during the time it has been deployed there. Furthermore, it indirectly protects national and European interests by shielding the living standards of our citizens from the constant increase in oil prices, the creation of inflation, and high costs, which constitute a threat. By protecting refineries and other strategic infrastructure, the Greek force in Saudi Arabia with the Patriots demonstrates its importance, and for this, I congratulate the Air Force personnel for this success."

The Hellenic Force Saudi Arabia

It is noted that the Greek Patriot systems have been in the region since 2021, via the Hellenic Force Saudi Arabia (ELDYSA), and remain there even after the onset of the war in the Middle East. This mission is part of the international 'Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) Concept' initiative and has the primary goal of strengthening the air and missile defense of Saudi Arabia.

The Hellenic Force Saudi Arabia constitutes a specialized defensive mission of the Air Force, focused on the operation and maintenance of a full Patriot MIM-104 Guided Missile Battery. The composition of the force includes approximately 120 personnel, including experienced radar operators, systems technicians, and support staff responsible for the continuous readiness of the anti-aircraft system.

The primary role of ELDYSA is purely defensive and involves providing anti-missile protection to critical Kingdom infrastructure, such as Aramco facilities, against threats from drones and ballistic missiles. The mission is integrated into the international framework of Integrated Air and Missile Defense, strengthening Greece's cooperation with the armed forces of Saudi Arabia and the US in the region.
