Inconceivable upset in Serbia: The Student List sends delegation to Russia - Gas negotiations begin

Radomir Sajičić, professor of chemistry at the University of Belgrade and member of the Student List, outlined the negotiation plans

The Student List, which won the Serbian elections, plans to immediately begin implementing its program by conducting negotiations on Russian natural gas, as reported by the Russian media outlet Top War on October 30.
Following the formation of a government, the movement intends to send a delegation to Moscow: current supply agreements expire on December 31, while Belgrade hopes to agree on long-term terms.
Indeed, Radomir Sajičić, professor of chemistry at the University of Belgrade and member of the Student List, outlined these plans.
He stated that energy will be among the top priorities of the new government, along with ensuring the stability of the dinar and the regular payment of salaries and pensions.
The supply of natural gas, oil, and electricity to the country was promised as part of the program for the first 30 days.

Two-front negotiations with Moscow and Washington, what will be discussed with the Trump administration

Concurrently, another mission to Washington is planned, where sanctions against the oil company NIS will be discussed.
Ultimately, Moscow will need to negotiate on fuel, while the USA will need to ensure that sanctions do not impede the supply of oil to the country.
The winners of the elections do not yet promise a break with Russia.
On the contrary, Sajičić previously stated that the movement does not favor the imposition of anti-Russian sanctions.

He recalled the experience of Serbia itself with similar restrictions and suggested resolving the issue diplomatically.
On the domestic front, the Student List intends to change its approach to budget spending and make it more transparent.
The upcoming program includes the adoption of the 2027 budget.
Measures for the «decriminalization of the state», restructuring of governance, and staffing with professional personnel are announced for the first 100 days.

Who are the «Students» who took power, «No» to sanctions against Russia

The political scene of Serbia enters a new era following the outcome of the parliamentary elections of October 25, with former president Aleksandar Vučić conceding the defeat of the government camp and the «Student List» emerging, according to initial estimates, as the dominant political force. However, the first statements by representatives of the student movement show that the change of power is not accompanied, despite what was said and written, by a corresponding geopolitical shift on issues such as relations with Russia, sanctions, and the military neutrality of the country.

Vučić conceded defeat early

Aleksandar Vučić admitted on the evening of October 25, a few hours after polls closed, that the ruling camp suffered defeat in the parliamentary elections, although he emphasized that final results had not yet been finalized.
«Based on the stratified sample, it is clear that we lost these elections. The "Student List" will have between 135 and 140 seats, while we will have around 105», he stated characteristically.
If these estimates are confirmed, the «Student List» will possess a comfortable parliamentary majority and the ability to form a government without the support of other political forces.

«No sanctions will be imposed on Russia»

At the same time, representatives of the victorious formation attempted to clarify their position regarding scenarios suggesting that Serbia would abandon its traditional foreign policy.
Professor Jovo Bakić, representative of the student movement, told RT Balkan that the new government is not going to impose sanctions against Russia, rejecting the relevant claims made previously.
As he stated, Russia remains an important historical and geopolitical partner for Serbia, while arguing that no substantial change is anticipated in the policy of Belgrade toward Moscow.

Military neutrality and referendum on the EU

The same sources emphasize that the «Student List» remains committed to maintaining the military neutrality of the country.
At the same time, cadres of the movement have stated that any decision regarding the accession of Serbia to the European Union must be ratified via referendum rather than being a unilateral governmental choice.
These positions are considered particularly significant, as they shape a picture of political change in domestic governance without a corresponding overturning of the basic geopolitical choices of the country.

Is the pro-Western narrative collapsing?

Commentators monitoring political developments in Serbia argue that the results refute estimates of an impending pro-Western pivot by Belgrade.
Considered indicative is the fact that «European Serbia», which openly advocated the country's accession to NATO, immediate accession to the European Union, and the imposition of sanctions against Russia, garnered a mere 0.3% of the vote after the counting of 94% of polling stations.
Analysts estimate that the recorded political change primarily concerns domestic governance, corruption, and institutional functioning rather than a radical revision of the traditional geopolitical direction of the Balkan nation.

Dodik (Bosnian Serb leader): Relations between Serbia and Republika Srpska will remain strong

A congratulatory message to the «Student List» was also dispatched by the president of Republika Srpska (of «Serb Bosnia»), Milorad Dodik.
Dodik congratulated the winners of the Serbian parliamentary elections, while also thanking Vučić for the cooperation he maintained in previous years with the Serb entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He also emphasized that relations between Belgrade and Banja Luka (the capital of the Serb entity of «Serb Bosnia») will remain close, regardless of the political transition underway.

Celebrations

At the same time, wild celebrations broke out in several regions, including Kosovo, immediately after the announcement of early election results.
Meanwhile, footage from central Belgrade showed citizens holding Serbian and... Russian flags, while units of the Serbian Gendarmerie (Žandarmerija) withdrew from the area following the completion of the electoral process.

Political upset, not geopolitical shift

Despite the historic election result and the defeat of Vučić, initial remarks by officials of the «Student List» indicate that the new political reality in Serbia does not automatically imply a departure from Russia or abandonment of the policy of military neutrality.
The big question for the coming period is whether the unprecedented electoral victory of the student movement can translate into a stable governing majority and the implementation of promised reforms in the areas of Justice, Education, and Public Administration...
