Houthi plan to expand Yemen territory as Saudi Arabia stalled
The Saudis, in essence, would be satisfied with a return to the previous status quo

The Houthis are attempting to «exploit» the broader regional conflict in order to expand the territories they control in Yemen, while Saudi Arabia seeks a return to the previous balance of power, according to political analyst Cyrus Schayegh.
Schayegh, Professor of International History and Politics at the Geneva Graduate Institute, told Al Jazeera that neither side appears to possess sufficient strength to prevail militarily over the other.
«I think the Saudis, in essence, would be satisfied with a return to the status quo ante», he stated, adding that the Houthis are seeking to turn tensions between the United States and Iran to their advantage.
As he explained, the armed group is attempting to exploit Saudi Arabia's vulnerabilities, as well as the weakness of the Riyadh-backed coalition of forces in Yemen, in order to broaden its territorial control.
Schayegh also warned that the conflicting objectives of the two sides may complicate efforts to reach an agreement.
«I think that will likely make reaching a deal quite difficult», he said, adding that the Houthis possess «great determination and a lot of patience».
