Flashpoint south of Crete as Libya issues shock ultimatum
Hostile note verbale from Libya...

Relations between Athens and Tripoli are entering a trajectory of dangerous escalation, as Libya unleashes a direct challenge against the sovereign rights of Greece south of Crete, threatening a complete termination of bilateral diplomatic negotiations, which signifies... conflict.
This nightmarish turn is triggered by intense dissatisfaction of the Libyan government regarding Greek plans to launch hydrocarbon exploration, at a juncture when geopolitical balances in the Eastern Mediterranean hang by a thread.
The ultimatum from Tripoli took official and overtly hostile form on August 24, when it dispatched a stern note verbale to Athens, expressing categorical opposition to Greek initiatives to exploit the region's vast energy reserves.
This blow is struck at the very moment energy giant Chevron prepares to deploy its activities across critical offshore blocks south of Crete, transforming this maritime zone into an arena of high geostrategic confrontation.

Claims

The Libyan side raises claims asserting that Greek actions violate areas where maritime delimitation has not been agreed upon.
In parallel, Tripoli arms its unilateral and unlawful claims by citing the arbitrary map it submitted to the United Nations in May 2025, attempting to impose faits accomplis at the expense of Greek territory.
At the epicenter of this international tempest lies the official Greek tender call for conducting seismic surveys, published in the Official Journal of the European Union on August 17, 2026.
The ambitious Greek program includes eight offshore areas, with three of them situated at the heart of the disputed sector, south and southwest of Crete.
While Athens stands firm based unswervingly on Greek legislation and the median line principle under International Law, Tripoli attempts to establish its claims on the Turkish-Libyan memorandum.
In doing so, it disputes the full maritime entitlement of Greek islands, essentially executing the geopolitical directives of Ankara.

The Saleh factor

The announcement of Aguila Saleh's departure from the presidency of parliament and his succession by a political figure fully controlled by the circle of Saddam Haftar radically changes the situation.
Saleh constituted the last bulwark against ratification of the Turkish-Libyan memorandum, having fiercely opposed its signing. His removal now opens wide the path toward full activation of the illegal pact.
Athens now faces an asphyxiating diplomatic and operational vise.
The direct linkage of Greek energy plans with the aggressive pursuits of Turkey and dangerous internal realignments in Libya composes an explosive cocktail, threatening to ignite the entire southeastern flank of NATO.
