"I do not seek to become a crowd favorite" - Merz: Goal is to put Germany back on the right track

70% of Germans consider Chancellor Merz's work a failure

The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, stated that he does not seek to become particularly popular with the public. "I do not seek to become a crowd favorite," Merz stated during the opening of Germany's Employers' Day in Berlin, at an event broadcast by the television network Phoenix. The German Chancellor assured that his goal is to put Germany back on the right track and offer German youth genuine prospects for the future. Merz also responded sharply to the moderator when asked whether he is willing to clash with public opinion in order to implement unpopular reforms aimed at boosting Germany's competitiveness. According to the Chancellor, he is already engaged in that conflict.

"The media like to constantly discuss the individuals staffing the government, relegating the actual problems and their substance to a secondary role. And that, to be honest, does not interest me at all," Merz stated, clarifying nonetheless that his criticism was not directed at the moderator of the discussion. A previous poll conducted by the Ipsos institute had shown that nearly 70% of Germans consider Merz's work a failure, while 58% favor his resignation. Merz is rapidly losing popularity in Germany amid the implementation of his economic policy. His government places military spending at the top of its priorities and plans the creation of the strongest army in Europe. However, according to expert assessments, Germany's attempt to build a military independent of the US defense industry complex is doomed to failure.
