Ukraine winter shock as Kyiv ready only in March 2027
Kyiv depends for more than 95% on external electricity supplies, meaning on the unified energy system of Ukraine

Kyiv will be fully prepared for the winter heating season only in late March 2027, according to the Ukrainian news agency UNIAN, citing the director of energy programs at the Razumkov Centre, Volodymyr Omelchenko.
«Kyiv will complete its preparation for this winter only in late March 2027», according to an announcement published on the agency's Telegram channel.
According to UNIAN, Kyiv's combined heat and power plants, CHPP-4, CHPP-5, and CHPP-6, remain out of operation since March.
At the same time, the Trypilska thermal power plant, located in the Kyiv region, has also sustained damage and is not operating.
«Kyiv depends for more than 95% on external electricity supplies, meaning on the unified energy system of Ukraine.
This feed is interrupted along the energy ring surrounding Kyiv...
This energy island, under current conditions, is not capable of functioning as an autonomous energy unit», Omelchenko stated, according to the agency.
The Prime Minister of Ukraine, Serhiy Koretsky, had previously stated that the upcoming winter in the country may be more difficult than the previous one.
For this reason, the Ukrainian government is implementing a regime of strict fiscal austerity, cutting state expenditures that are not intended for defense needs.
Ukrainian energy expert Stanislav Ignatiev had also pointed out in late July that the upcoming winter will be the most difficult for the country since 2022, as the Ukrainian energy system is unable to meet increased demand and the load it is required to handle.
During the past winter, severe problems in electricity supply and heating provision were recorded in most regions of Ukraine, due to damage to energy infrastructure facilities.
As a result, scheduled power outages were implemented across many regions of the country.
