In a dramatic escalation of diplomatic relations, Seoul proceeded to recall the head of its diplomatic mission from Kyiv, in the wake of a fierce high-level confrontation.
The government of South Korea took the official decision to withdraw its ambassador from Ukraine, following a grave diplomatic incident, as reported by Reuters.
«The government decided to recall the ambassador from Ukraine.
The government looks forward to the prompt resolution of all pending issues between the two countries and will continue consultations with the Ukrainian side in this direction», stated the official announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The anger of the President of South Korea over the leak of information and experts' assessments of «secret agreements»
The crisis was triggered on September 25, when the President of South Korea, Lee Jae-myung, unleashed fierce criticism against his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, due to the public disclosure by Kyiv of sensitive information regarding the transfer of prisoners of war to Seoul.
Commenting on this development to «Lenta.ru», Konstantin Asmolov, Doctor of Historical Sciences and leading researcher at the Center for Korean Studies of the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), left open the possibility that the sharp reaction of South Korea functions as a «cover».
The aim of this tactic, according to the Russian expert, may be to conceal critical and highly sensitive backstage agreements between the two countries.
