Stability through deterrence: Why the Mecca Pact was triggered
This alliance has no offensive objectives nor does it seek to wage war against other countries, it is a defensive approach

The Joint Defense Agreement of Mecca aims to ensure stability through deterrence and regional security, stated Zahid Mahmood, a retired Pakistani Major General, speaking to Al Jazeera, adding that following Monday's meeting between top officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey, further operational implementation of the agreement is likely.
«You cannot achieve deterrence without a credible mindset or credible implementation», stated Zahid Mahmood, who now works as a security analyst.
«And credibility always depends on the willingness to use your troops, or your military capabilities, or your diplomatic efforts, in accordance with the spirit of this agreement.
We will see somewhat greater operational implementation on the ground in order to achieve this deterrence through credibility», argued Mahmood.
As he argued, the alliance among the three countries is exceptionally important given the uncertainty prevailing in the region.
«This alliance has no offensive objectives nor does it seek to wage war against other countries.
It is exclusively a defensive approach.
We see the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Saudi Arabia being challenged by the Houthis.
And when the sovereignty of a partner country is challenged, such security architectures always play a decisive role», pointed out the analyst.
