European Commission denies Ukrainian claim of €27 billion "gap" – "There is no financing deficit"

European Commission denies Ukrainian claim of €27 billion
Statements from the European Commission follow reports regarding a €27 billion financing gap in Ukraine

Kyiv is not facing a fiscal deficit amounting to €27 billion, European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho informed journalists. "We never said there was a financing gap. That is what we hear from media reports. Yesterday, together with our Ukrainian friends, we concluded that there is no financing deficit," she stated. When questioned by a reporter about how the alleged funding shortfall for Kyiv originated, Pinho advised directing the question to the Ukrainian leadership, noting they possess additional information regarding the matter. She highlighted that the European Commission has not identified any financial shortfall based on available data.

€34 billion in funding remains "on track"

European Commission spokesperson Balazs Ujvari, who oversees Ukraine financing, noted that the core outcome of yesterday's meeting was evaluating the EU financial resources currently available. "The figure yesterday stood at €37 billion. Today it dropped slightly, to €34 billion, given the disbursement of €2.9 billion we just executed," he stated. He added that the European Commission concluded that funding streams currently "on track" are sufficient to cover Ukraine's financial needs for the ongoing year.

Focus on additional funding requirements

Ujvari also emphasized that the European Commission counts on international partners to deliver any additional financial assistance Kyiv might require. The Commission's statements arrive following reports alleging a €27 billion gap in Ukraine, which Brussels denies while reaffirming that planned EU budget allocation targets are adequate to address requirements throughout 2026.
