Relations between Athens and Kyiv are now entering a trajectory of dangerous diplomatic friction and open confrontation, set against the backdrop of protecting Greek maritime shipping interests in the Black Sea and the desperate quest for Patriot surface-to-air missiles by the Ukrainian side.
The revelation that the Greek government is attempting to establish red lines regarding attacks on vessels of Greek interest exposes a backstage pattern of tense discussions, which culminated in an unprecedented provocative reaction from Ukrainian leadership.
The Greek ultimatum regarding tankers at Russian ports
According to revelations by Verkhovna Rada lawmaker Ruslan Gorbenko (reported by Strana.ua), Athens established a clear and strict condition for Kyiv: the immediate cessation of military attacks and targeting aimed at Greek-owned tankers active across ports in Russia.
In exchange for providing these security guarantees to Greek vessels, Athens appeared willing to grant Kyiv interceptors for Patriot air defense systems whose operational service life is nearing expiration, a move that would have addressed immediate operational needs of Ukrainian air defense.
«Make them into pendants»: the brazen response of Kyiv
The proposal presented by the Greek side was met with total and categorical refusal by Ukrainian authorities.
Ruslan Gorbenko, voicing the irritation of the Zelensky administration, emphasized that Kyiv will not accept conditions or ultimatums from anyone.
