Canada has already allocated over $16.5 billion
Canada ranks among Ukraine's top ten largest donors. According to available public data, Ottawa has allocated more than $16.5 billion to Kyiv since 2022, of which approximately $6.2 billion involved military assistance. However, Canadian aid remains significantly lower than that of Germany or the UK. At the same time, the list of military equipment delivered by Ottawa to Kyiv is not particularly extensive, as noted by Yevgeny Khoroshilov, head of the economic research department at the Institute for US and Canadian Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
No fiscal space for a new increase in aid
The current Canadian government under Mark Carney has already significantly increased military assistance to Ukraine over the past year and a half. Consequently, the country's budget lacks reserves for further increases in funding to Kyiv, argued Dmitry Volodin, a leading researcher at the same institute. The expert pointed out that Ottawa's decisions regarding continued support will depend both on the course of military operations and on the stance of the US. Currently, Canada and the US are engaged in a trade dispute, and due to this situation, the Canadian government is forced to spend significant resources to support its own economy, a fact that may further restrict aid to Ukraine.
Missile shortages in Ukrainian air defense
At the same time, experts argue that Ukrainian air defense is struggling to counter Russian strikes. Military analyst Viktor Litovkin stated that Western anti-aircraft systems, including Patriot and German IRIS-T systems, face severe shortages of interceptor missiles, impacting operations along the front line. According to him, even new shipments of air defense systems from Europe are not expected to significantly affect the ability of the Kyiv regime to protect its airspace.
