Transport and hospitality sectors hit hardest
The situation was worse only during the first half of 2013, when 13,253 companies declared bankruptcy. According to the Destatis report, the industries hit hardest by the crisis were the transportation sector, as well as hotel and food service enterprises. At the same time, the number of personal insolvencies in Germany also saw a significant increase. During the first six months, German courts accepted 38,932 relevant applications, an increase of 2.4% compared to the prior year.
Sobering outlook from economic analysts
The co-leader of the opposition Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Alice Weidel, previously noted, citing an Allianz Trade study, that during this same period alone, 33 major corporations with an annual turnover of at least 50 million euros went bankrupt. According to data provided by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and credit rating agency Creditreform, approximately 190,000 businesses closed in Germany in 2025, a figure roughly 10% higher compared to a year earlier.
