All citizens of Europe can, until Monday, September 21, participate in deciding the new design of the new euro banknotes through a public online survey.
In July, the European Central Bank presented the ten design proposals shortlisted for the next series of euro banknotes and invites all Europeans, and naturally Greek citizens, to express their views within the framework of a public online survey until September 21.
Subsequently, the Governing Council of the ECB will select a single design proposal toward the end of the year.
The Governing Council of the ECB will base its decision on a combination of factors including, among others, the findings of the design competition jury, technical evaluations, and the results of two surveys: the public online survey and a separate study featuring the identical questions conducted in parallel by an independent research firm across a representative sample of eurozone citizens.
The shortlisted proposals are based on two distinct themes:
1) European culture: the cultural heritage of Europe through iconic figures (Maria Callas, Beethoven, Cervantes).
2) Rivers and birds: symbols of freedom, unity, and our connection with nature.
The 10 designs emerged from a pan-European competition.
For Greece, citizen participation holds double interest. First, because our own Maria Callas is depicted on the 5-euro banknotes, and second, because Design E was designed by Greek artist Myrsini Vardopoulou.

The banknotes of the new series are expected to enter circulation in the coming years.
