North Korean KN-23 ballistic missiles are at the center of a new Russian attack on Kyiv, with video footage from the Ukrainian capital capturing two exceptionally powerful explosions at close range. The presence of a North Korean-made weapon in Russian attacks represents one of the most distinctive indications of military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang. The KN-23 is a short-range ballistic missile that Russia has incorporated into the arsenal it uses against Ukraine.

Its deployment is not unprecedented in the war, as North Korean missiles have been recorded in Ukraine since early 2024 and have been used repeatedly by Russian forces ever since; however, this latest attack brings North Korea's role as a major missile system supplier back into the spotlight. During the overnight raid, Russia launched a combined strike involving ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones. In Kyiv, two people were killed and at least ten were injured, according to Ukrainian authorities. The images of the blasts highlight yet another dimension of the conflict: weapons manufactured thousands of miles away in North Korea are now actively deployed on the battlefield and used in strikes against the capital.
