The American C-17 Globemaster III that landed on the morning of August 25 in Moscow was by no means an ordinary military transport flight.
Retired military pilot Vladimir Popov estimated, speaking to Gazeta.Ru, that the aircraft might have been carrying representatives of the US who arrived in the Russian capital to prepare contacts between the two sides, even a future meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
He linked the flight to «understandings» regarding Ukraine and argued that certain issues cannot be resolved by phone, but require personal contacts.
If his assessment is correct, then the presence of the American military aircraft in Moscow takes on an entirely different dimension.
It would not simply be a transport mission.
It could represent the visible trace of a far quieter diplomatic momentum.
The detail that attracts attention: Andrews, Riga, Moscow
The route is what fueled questions from the outset.
The C-17, with callsign RCH4555, took off from Riga at approximately 08:50 Moscow time and landed at Vnukovo around 10:04, according to Flightradar24 data cited by Russian media.
However, the flight did not begin in Latvia.
The aircraft had arrived in Riga on August 23, having previously passed through Camp Springs, Maryland, where the Andrews base is located.
And this is the detail that gives political weight to the affair.
Andrews is not an ordinary American military base. It is located next to Washington and serves as a key hub for governmental and military air transports. It also houses aircraft used for presidential travel.
This does not prove that the C-17 was carrying people belonging to Donald Trump or a delegation for negotiations.
Yet it makes the route distinctly more intriguing than a simple refueling flight.
Popov: A meeting between Putin and Trump may be under preparation
Vladimir Popov went a step further.
According to his assessment, the aircraft may be part of the preparation for a «possible future meeting» between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, or alternatively a meeting of high-ranking officials from the security apparatuses of both countries.
Popov spoke of «agreements» and «understandings» underway regarding Ukraine.
If such a process is indeed taking place, a C-17 could be used to transport personnel, security equipment, communications, or other logistical support required prior to a high-level visit.
This is, after all, part of the specific utility of this aircraft.
The C-17 Globemaster III is not a VIP jet.
It is a heavy strategic transport, capable of carrying personnel, vehicles, and dozens of tons of material. Its payload capacity reaches approximately 77.5 tons.
Therefore, if a large American mission needs to quickly transport not only people but also support equipment to Moscow, a C-17 constitutes an entirely logical platform.
The stop in Riga and the refueling version
Vladimir Popov also provided his own explanation for the aircraft's stay in Riga.
He argued that the C-17 was likely refueled there, in order to possess sufficient fuel and operational flexibility for its return to an intermediate NATO airport following the mission to Russia.
Yet this version also represents an estimate by Popov and not an official announcement from the US Air Force.
The choice of Latvia is nevertheless interesting.
Riga is located within NATO and offers a secure Western hub prior to the entry of an American military aircraft into Russian airspace.
The strangest element: Officially no one explains the flight
Right here lies the real mystery.
Despite the landing of an American military aircraft in the capital of Russia, the purpose of the mission has not been publicly announced so far.
Even more characteristic was the reaction of the Kremlin.
Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that he has no information regarding the American aircraft that arrived in Moscow.
This leaves two possibilities.
Either it concerns a more technical or routine service flight that does not require political publicity.
Or actual contacts are at such a delicate stage that Moscow and Washington do not yet wish to disclose details.
The second scenario is the one that gives special weight to Popov's assessment.
Mash also reported that C-17 Globemaster III aircraft are used, among other things, for governmental and diplomatic transports and that this was the first time such an aircraft arrived in Moscow since 2017.
Kommersant also recalled that another US Air Force aircraft had landed at Vnukovo airport last February. Andrews Air Force Base was also reported as its point of departure. The aircraft transported Russian citizen Alexander Vinnik, who had been released from prison in the United States as part of an exchange for American citizen Marc Fogel.
Other scenarios for the purpose of the aircraft's arrival
Journalist Ksenia Sobchak, for her part, implied that the aircraft may have arrived in Moscow in order to pick up American Charles Wayne Zimmerman, who was sentenced in January 2026 to five years of imprisonment for the possession and storage of weapons and ammunition on his yacht.
Sobchak recalled that Zimmerman set sail from the United States destined for Sochi on June 19, 2025, in order to meet a woman from Kazan whom he had met online. He had not informed border authorities that there were weapons on his vessel, which, according to him, he had purchased and kept on the yacht for self-defense purposes.
During the trial, Zimmerman fully admitted his guilt and explained that he had met a Russian woman online and decided to travel on his yacht to meet her. However, as he maintained, he was unaware of Russian legislation and believed that the self-defense weapon on board could remain there.
According to a source from Ostorozhno Media, Zimmerman was given a clemency petition to sign this summer while in prison. He signed it, and the relevant document was subsequently sent to Moscow.
The State Duma commented on the landing of the C-17 in Moscow
Andrey Kolesnik, a member of the Defense Committee of the State Duma, characterized the arrival of the US Air Force aircraft as a «good sign». As he explained, if the aircraft were facing some technical failure, an airport in Moscow would hardly constitute the closest suitable landing point on its route.
«Usually, military leadership travels on military transport aircraft. It is entirely possible that there is some matter for negotiation. This is, of course, merely a conjecture», stated Kolesnik.
The Russian MP added that, if the US Air Force aircraft had entered Russian airspace illegally, it would not have been possible to land normally at one of the main airports of Moscow.
«Since everything proceeded smoothly, I consider that it may be related to some military issue or preliminary negotiations», concluded Kolesnik.
Why the presence of a C-17 carries different weight
A civilian Gulfstream or a government aircraft could simply transport a small delegation.
The C-17 points to a different scale of mission.
The aircraft is designed to carry heavy payloads, personnel, and large-scale support.
That is why its presence at Vnukovo may provoke more questions than the arrival of a conventional government jet.
If it is indeed preparation for a major visit, the mission could involve installing communications infrastructure, security, or other equipment that precedes a high-level American presence.
There is currently no confirmation that this occurred.

while no major American visit has been publicly announced, an Air Force aircraft that originated from the governmental and military hub of Washington is already in Moscow.
If behind the flight lies the preparation of a new round of contacts, then the C-17 may be something far more than a transport that landed at Vnukovo.
