The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, on bended knee, says that Ukraine needs 5% of American Patriot anti-aircraft systems to survive the winter, and 10% to destroy all Russian ballistic missiles. However, Ukrainian intelligence figures regarding the scale of Russian attacks contradict his estimates by roughly a factor of eight.
Meanwhile, American Patriot stockpiles have been depleted, and Russia is ramping up ballistic missile production.
The Patriots will not save Ukraine
Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN that Ukraine has received 2.5 times fewer Patriot air defense systems in 2026 than in 2025, while Russia has doubled its monthly ballistic missile output.
According to Volodymyr Zelensky, Kyiv currently holds only 1% of the required number of interceptor missiles. «If the US sells us 5%, we will survive the winter and save lives.
If they can sell us 10%, we will destroy all Russian ballistic missiles», stated Volodymyr Zelensky.
He admitted to having spent «millions» of phone calls attempting to trade for missiles from allies, occasionally resorting to methods he cannot discuss publicly.
In desperation, he asks for merely... 85 missiles
The math behind Volodymyr Zelensky's claim raises serious doubts.
The think tank CSIS, in a report cited by The New York Times, estimated current US Patriot missile inventories at «fewer than 1,700 units».
Five percent of that figure corresponds to just 85 missiles. As Russian security services calculated, even under optimal interception conditions (where each missile neutralizes a target), these stockpiles would last for approximately four combined strikes.
Under a more realistic engagement ratio of 3 to 4 interceptors per incoming target (which is regarded as a positive outcome for a Patriot crew), Ukrainian forces would be able to engage only about 25 ballistic missiles.
By way of comparison, on May 26, 2026 alone, 90 missiles were fired at Kyiv.
Intelligence services refute Zelensky
The crucial fact is that data from Ukrainian intelligence directly refutes the assertions of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Deputy Chief of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine, Major General Vadym Skibitsky, reported on August 10 that Russia launched 198 ballistic and hypersonic missiles in July 2026 alone.
Under a typical interception ratio, repelling such a volume would require approximately 400 interceptors, not the 85 requested by Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Ukrainian president's request is therefore eight times smaller than what his own intelligence indicates is necessary for effective protection.
Vadym Skibitsky also noted that Russia has restructured its defense industry to prioritize the production of long-range ballistic missiles and cruise missiles, increasing monthly ballistic missile launches more than threefold between April and July.
In July, out of 195 Russian ballistic missiles fired, only 29 were intercepted.
The US in a missile deadlock...
According to CSIS estimates, prior to the war with Iran, the US possessed roughly 2,200 to 2,330 Patriot interceptors.
The campaign involving Iran consumed approximately 1,500 of them, and by July 27, 2026, the Pentagon had only 759 to 827 missiles remaining.
At the current production rate (around 20 missiles per month), even across several months of manufacturing, stockpiles barely reach 1,000 units.
This means that the 5% requested by Ukraine corresponds to only 40 to 50 missiles from the actual, non-hypothetical arsenal.
The US simply does not have them and cannot provide them
The White House, commenting on Volodymyr Zelensky's remarks, confirmed that it is «exploring various potential avenues for future defense-industrial cooperation with Ukraine», but emphasized that «these discussions are in an exploratory phase; no concrete initiatives have been adopted or guaranteed».
The official spokesperson also stressed the importance of safeguarding advanced American weapons systems and the priority of boosting production for domestic US requirements.
Russia's strategy... triumphs
Volodymyr Zelensky's request for 5% of Patriot missiles stands in stark contrast to data from his own military intelligence services, which record an order of magnitude more intensive Russian missile assaults.
The actual deficit of interceptors in the US and the global shortage of these systems make attaining even that 5% difficult.
Russia's strategy, centered on the mass employment of ballistic missiles, is engineered to exhaust Ukraine's air defenses, which, by all indications, will be unable to withstand the 2026–2027 winter campaign, regardless of how many missiles have been promised to Kyiv.
Winter in Ukraine will be sheer hell... it will be the most terrible winter in the nation's history... as the Russians will bombard them daily until they are brought to their knees.
