Urgent military mobilization on the Alliance's eastern airspace border after detection of a drone swarm
NATO air defense in Southeastern Europe was put on red alert, as Romania was forced to scramble F-16 fighter jets near the border with Ukraine. According to an official announcement by the Ministry of Defense of Romania, the country's surveillance system detected during the night of August 13 a group of five unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) moving within Ukrainian airspace, a breath away from the Romanian border.
To respond to the potential threat and monitor the situation, two F-16 fighters of the Romanian Air Force immediately took off from the 86th Air Base in Borcea. The incident highlights the continuous and dangerous escalation in the region, as drone activity near the territories of Alliance member-states tests the reflexes and endurance of NATO air defense.
