India's contrasting story

The situation is noticeably different for IT companies in India. Unlike South Korea's chipmakers, Indian IT firms are not directly involved in hardware manufacturing or foundational model development. Their revenues remain heavily dependent on enterprise technology services such as application development, cloud migration, consulting, and digital transformation, rendering them indirect beneficiaries rather than direct participants in the AI infrastructure boom. Meena noted that while companies like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro are increasingly securing AI-related contracts, clients are simultaneously demanding productivity gains through generative AI, dampening demand for traditional coding, testing, and maintenance services that historically formed the backbone of India's IT outsourcing industry.

This transition has led to slower revenue growth and persistent valuation pressure despite healthy balance sheets. He believes Indian IT firms can eventually reposition higher up the value chain through enterprise deployment, domain-specific AI agents, governance frameworks, data modernization, and outcome-based contracts. However, achieving this transformation will require larger investments in intellectual property and a gradual departure from the labor arbitrage model that drove the industry's expansion for decades.
