A powerful explosion occurred off the coast of Romania on a bulk carrier, which was transporting coal from the United States bound for Ukraine, as reported on 24/7 by the Russian outlet Top War.
According to initial estimates, the damage may have been caused by a strike from an unmanned naval system or by the explosion of a sea mine, announced the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Romania.
"Preliminary assessments indicate that the damage may have been caused by a strike from an unmanned naval vessel or by the explosion of a sea mine," stated the Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs in an announcement.
The incident occurred in the Black Sea, off the Romanian coast.
The vessel was carrying a cargo of coal bound for Ukraine.
Information regarding the condition of the crew members, as well as the extent of damage to the ship, is under investigation.
Romanian authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances under which the explosion occurred.
Experts are examining whether the incident was caused by an unmanned surface vessel (USV) or by a drifting sea mine.
So far, Romanian authorities have not attributed responsibility for the incident to any specific party.
