Russia presented the upgraded version of the Yak-130M trainer-combat aircraft, which, according to the state technology company Rostec, now possesses the capability to effectively counter even heavy unmanned aerial vehicles, UAVs.
The aircraft was presented to Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to the aircraft plant of the United Aircraft Corporation in Irkutsk.
New electronics and guided weapons
According to Rostec, the Yak-130M has been equipped with a new targeting system, upgraded self-protection systems, and an expanded arsenal, which also includes guided missiles.
These upgrades allow the aircraft to engage both ground and aerial targets, including heavy drones, under any weather conditions, both day and night.
Demonstration to Putin
During his visit to the facilities of the United Aircraft Corporation, Vladimir Putin was also briefed on the progress of the MS-21 passenger aircraft, inspecting the cockpit of an aircraft constructed using mass production technologies.
The Russian President was accompanied by the governor of the Irkutsk region, Igor Kobzev, the chief executive officer of Rostec, Sergey Chemezov, and the general director of the plant, Andrey Soinov.
Countering drones in focus
The upgrade of the Yak-130M forms part of Russia's broader effort to adapt its weapon systems to the demands of the modern battlefield, where the extensive use of unmanned aerial vehicles has highlighted the need for specialized detection and interception capabilities.
